Abstract:

Wound closure methods and apparatus are provided which utilize blood fluid by activating the clotting cascade of blood fluid outside the body within a substantially enclosed sterile container then introducing the blood fluid to the wound site to complete clotting. Methods and apparatus for providing ways of inhibiting anti-coagulating agents and slowing fibrin clot degradation are also disclosed. Kits for practicing the invention singularly or in combination with and/or associated with preferred procedures are also disclosed. The present invention provides improved methods of creating hemostasis or control of bleeding at the site of wounds, particularly wounds created in arteries during procedures employing percutaneous access. The invention preferably includes the steps of acquiring an aliquot of a patients blood, i. e. , autologous blood, removing a negatively charged anti-coagulating agent, preferably heparin, from the blood, and preferably initiating the bloods natural clotting cascades and transporting the thus treated blood to the site of the wound where the clotting cascade will be completed producing a clot at the wound site that will create a condition of hemostasis.

A voltage-isolating passageway for providing high voltage isolation between a component maintained at high DC voltage and a component maintained at a substantially lower voltage is described. The voltage-isolating passageway incorporates a transverse magnetic field across its passageway, which reduces the potential energy of charged particles (e. g. , electrons) passing through the passageway. The reduction in electron potential energy reduces the energy of collisions between electrons and molecules and therefore reducing the likelihood of avalanche ionization. The voltage-isolating passageway includes a passageway and at least two magnets. The passageway has two openings and the two magnets are positioned along opposite and exterior surfaces of the passageway wherein the first and second magnets impose a magnetic field in a transverse direction with respect to a lengthwise axis of the passageway. In addition, a semi-conductive coating can be applied to the interior passageway surface to help remove potential energy from the gas that comes in direct contact with the coating.

Abstract:

A container for housing a fluid therapeutic composition includes a rigid housing, a collapsible bag and a seal. The housing has an opening and an interior surface. The interior surface forms a cavity having a volume. The bag is disposed in the housing and is expandable to contact the interior surface of the housing and occupy the entire volume of the cavity when filled with the fluid therapeutic composition. The bag has an opening that is fixed in proximity to the opening of the housing. The seal is configured to prevent air from entering the bag via the bag opening and to prevent air from entering the cavity of the housing via the housing opening.
