Abstract:

Described is a novel relational database architecture that is adapted to storing information regarding the terms of one or more contracts, and the actions required to be performed under it. The database resides on a computer-readable storage medium as part of a multi-user computer network. By using simple subroutines readily apparent to one skilled in the computer arts, one can automatically generate alerts whenever an action needs to be performed. These alerts are then transmitted to users along the multi-computer network, appearing in an e-mail message that specifies the action, the individuals performing it, and the duties of each of these individuals. In this manner, one can ensure timely execution of the actions required under a contract.

Abstract:

A single channel MÃN optic switch is provided in accordance with the present invention to steer light radiating from any one fiber in an input bundle into any selected fiber in an output bundle. Precision beam-steering optics is implemented using a Risley prism pair controlled by a small computer. In order to efficiently couple light between two single-mode optical fibers a low-aberration lens approximately collimates the light from the source fiber before it is passed through the Risley prisms in order to minimize the aberrations introduced by the prisms as they collectively deflect the beam through some precise angle. A second low-aberration objective lens is used to refocus the light at the core of a selected output fiber. The focusing lens transforms the angular deflection of the beam into a change in the position of the focused spot in the focal plane of the lens. In order to switch the light beam from one fiber in the output bundle to another, the Risley prisms are individually rotated about the optical axis to predetemined orientations so as to deflect the collimated light at the exact angle necessary to direct the focused spot to the core of a selected output fiber.

Abstract:

An active imaging system has a low to medium powered laser transmitter and receiver wherein the receiver includes a Faraday filter with an ultranarrow optical bandpass and a bare (nonintensified) CCD camera. The laser is locked in the vicinity of the passband of the Faraday filter. The system has high sensitivity to the laser illumination while eliminating solar background.

Abstract:

A parallel plate lateral shearing interferometer allows the shearing plate to oscillate through a small angle periodically causing the interference fringe pattern to translate on a display surface providing an indication of the direction of adjustment required to collimate a beam. At the point of exact collimation the interference pattern changes abrubtly to a blinking pattern of dark and light. In one embodiment the shearing plate is oscillated by a new kind of electronic translator that functions by thermal expansion and contraction, and in another embodiment the shearing plate moves as a pendulum. An alternative embodiment of the translator is also provided for non-oscillatory precision translations.

Disclosed is a lens assembly having a first cylindrical microlens having a first microlens longitudinal axis. A flat sheet of material having a hole therein is attached to the microlens, with the microlens traversing the hole. Abstract:

A new cylindrical minilens and a new lens system for collimating and circularizing the output beam from a laser diode are provided which can be mounted outside the can of a laser diode. The system is made up of two lens elements. The first lens element is a collimating lens which is located to receive the output beam from the laser diode. The collimating lens is typically a standard small lens used in the art for collimating the output beam on a first axis, such that the output beam when it leaves the collimating lens has a desired amount of collimation and has a desired dimension on a second axis that is orthogonal to the first axis. The second lens element is a cylindrical minilens of new design which is located to receive the output beam from the collimating lens, with the cylindrical minilens configured for changing the size of the output beam such that the output beam has a first desired dimension on the first axis and a desired amount of collimation of the output beam on the second axis, so that the output beam is collimated to a desired amount on each axis and has a desired ellipticity.

Abstract:

The present invention provides a diffraction limited, high numerical aperture (fast) cylindrical microlens. The method for making the microlens is adaptable to produce a cylindrical lens that has almost any shape on its optical surfaces. The cylindrical lens may have a shape, such as elliptical or hyperbolic, designed to transform some particular given input light distribution into some desired output light distribution. In the method, the desired shape is first formed in a glass preform. Then, the preform is heated to the minimum drawing temperature and a fiber is drawn from it. The cross-sectional shape of the fiber bears a direct relation to the shape of the preform from which it was drawn. During the drawing process, the surfaces become optically smooth due to fire polishing. The present invention has many applications, such as integrated optics, optical detectors and laser diodes.
