Abstract:

An intelligent agent workbench is disclosed for developing a computer-based intelligent agent that can be inserted between a system and an individual performing a pre-defined function with the system and/or that can supplant such function performed by such individual. In the workbench, an agent author allows a workbench user to create and modify an intelligent agent in a graphical representation. The workbench also has an execution engine for executing a non-graphical representation of the agent both within the workbench and outside the workbench as a stand-alone agent, and an interpreter for automatically translating between the non-graphical and graphical representations. The agent has an instance structure representing a current problem instance, perception structures, task performance structures, and a priority structure. Each perception structure represents information perceived from the system, and includes sub-structures for obtaining information from the system and updating the instance structure therewith. Each task performance structure represents a task the agent can perform, and includes sub-structures for accessing the instance structure to obtain instance information, modifying instance information in the instance structure, and determining a priority for the task performance structure and notifying the instance structure of the determined priority.

Abstract:

Processes for preparing amidoamine products derived from hydrocarbon polymers containing carboxylic acid, thioacid, ester or thioester functional groups are disclosed. More particularly, a process is disclosed which comprises the steps of: (A) reacting (i) a hydrocarbon polymer functionalized to contain functional groups of formula --CO--Y--R. sup. 3, the hydrocarbon polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 500 prior to functionalization, wherein Y is O or S, R. sup. 3 is hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, or substituted hydrocarbyl and wherein at least 50 mole % of the functional groups are attached to a tertiary carbon atom of the polymer, with (ii) a volatile amine containing at least two reactive amino groups under conditions effective to amidate at least a portion of the --CO--Y--R. sup. 3 functional groups and form a first amidoamine adduct containing at least one reactive amino group; and (B) reacting the first amidoamine adduct with an. alpha. ,. beta. -unsaturated compound to form a second amidoamine adduct, wherein the. alpha. ,. beta.

The invention pertains to improved lubricating oil dispersants wherein a fractionating polymer is prepared prior to functionalization (e. g. , in the Koch reaction) for making dispersant additives. In one aspect, it was discovered that by fractionating a polymer to remove light hydrocarbon and unreacted monomer from the polymer before the carbonylation step of the Koch reaction, the amount of light ester impurities generated was minimized. Light ester is an undesirable byproduct that adversely affects the recycle of the catalyst from the functionalization step of the Koch reaction. The invention also pertains to improved lubricating oil nitrogen-containing dispersant additives derived from fractionated polymer.
