  • Pallet Having A Pallet Deck With A Movable Portion And An Associated Method

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6539881, Apr 1, 2003
  • Filed:
    Feb 14, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/783347
  • Inventors:
Steven Leo Underbrink - Carnation WA
James Robert Underbrink - Seattle WA
  • Assignee:
The Boeing Company - Seattle WA
  • International Classification:
    B65D 1944
  • US Classification:
    108 553, 206386
  • Abstract:
A pallet and an associated method are provided for supporting an item mounted upon casters. The pallet includes a pallet deck having a fixed portion and a movable portion. The movable portion moves between a first position in which the movable portion is displaced, such as by being rotated downwardly, from the fixed portion and a second position in which the movable and fixed portions cooperate to define a support surface. The movable portion is in the second position while the item is loaded, but is moved to the first position during shipment. The pallet also includes a support for supporting the item once the movable portion is in the first position. Prior thereto, however, the item is typically spaced from the support. Each support can include a stationary portion and a movable portion that moves between a retracted position to facilitate loading and an extended position during shipment.
  • Multi-Arm Elliptic Logarithmic Spiral Arrays Having Broadband And Off-Axis Application

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6583768, Jun 24, 2003
  • Filed:
    Jan 18, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/051235
  • Inventors:
James R. Underbrink - Seattle WA
  • Assignee:
The Boeing Company - Chicago IL
  • International Classification:
    H01Q 2100
  • US Classification:
    343893, 343895, 381 92, 367905
  • Abstract:
A multi-arm elliptic logarithmic spiral array that is particularly effective in off-axis beamforming applications. The array is formed by providing an elliptic logarithmic spiral and a plurality of concentric ellipses which intersect with angularly spaced apart sample points on the elliptic logarithmic spiral. An odd number of sample points are included on each ellipse. The array of the present invention is particularly effective in off-axis beamforming applications, such as aeroacoustic test applications within wind tunnels, where the location of the array is fixed and the source of noise is positioned off axis of the array.

  • Method And Apparatus For Identifying Noise Sources

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7929376, Apr 19, 2011
  • Filed:
    Apr 25, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/109791
  • Inventors:
James Robert Underbrink - Seattle WA, US
Leon Brusniak - Lynnwood WA, US
  • Assignee:
The Boeing Company - Chicago IL
  • International Classification:
    H04B 1/06
  • US Classification:
    367135
  • Abstract:
A computer implemented method and apparatus for identifying component breakdown of noise sources. Noise data is received for a noise source from an array of sound sensors. Measurement points of interest, candidate sound source points along an axis, and array aperture angles are identified. Sets of first and second bounding traces are identified from ray traces extending from the candidate noise source points towards the measurement points of interest using the array aperture angles. The bounding ray traces are rotated around the axis to form sets of first and second surfaces. Sets of first and second curves are identified from an intersection of the sets of first and second surfaces with the ground plane. Sound sensors are selected from the array using the curves to form subarrays. The component breakdown of noise generated by the noise source is identified using noise data from sound sensors in the subarrays.
  • System And Method For Adaptable Aperture Planar Phased Array

    view source
  • US Patent:
    8009507, Aug 30, 2011
  • Filed:
    Jan 9, 2009
  • Appl. No.:
    12/351345
  • Inventors:
James R. Underbrink - Seattle WA, US
  • Assignee:
The Boeing Company - Chicago IL
  • International Classification:
    G03H 3/00
  • US Classification:
    367 8, 367 7, 367 12, 367118, 342367, 381 92
  • Abstract:
A system for an adaptable aperture planar array for maintaining source resolution is provided. The system includes a first nested array defining a first aperture responsive to a first range of frequencies. The first aperture is sized based on an angle between the array and the source, and includes a first subset of sensor elements. The system includes a second nested array defining a second aperture responsive to a second range of frequencies that is less than the first range of frequencies. The second aperture is sized based on the angle between the array and the source, and includes a second subset of sensor elements. The first aperture and second aperture change in size as the angle changes, which results in a change in the sensor elements within the first subset and the second subset to maintain the source resolution for the array.
