Implements, particularly medical instruments, formed at least in part of elongated polymer members, exhibit high torque fidelity after processing with tension, heat, and twisting. The processing orients the polymer in generally helical paths so that torque imposed at the proximal end can be transmitted to the distal end without substantial whipping, even if the implement follows a long and tortuous pathway. Abstract:

A method of forming a balloon for medical purposes comprising co-extruding in a tubular shape a base structural layer of a member selected from the group consisting oft polyamides, polycarbonates, polyesters and copolymers thereof and a heat sealable layer selected from the group consisting of polyethylene and copolymers thereof. The tubular member is then biaxially oriented by inflating the tube with a gas to a predetermined central diameter greater then the initial diameter of the tube and simultaneously heating the inflated tube to a temperature sufficient to biaxially orient the base structural layer. The member is then cooled the inflated tubular member and then elevated in temperature for a second time to the biaxially orienting temperature. The twice-heated tube is allowed to cool and the gas is withdrawn whereby the tubular member will assume a generally tubular shape and the main structural layer will remain biaxially orientated and the heat sealable layer will not be biaxially orientated.

Abstract:

A method for plasma etching a semiconductor film stack. The film stack includes at least one layer comprising silicon oxynitride. The method includes etching the silicon oxynitride-comprising layer using an etchant gas mixture comprising chlorine and at least one compound containing fluorine and carbon. The atomic ratio of fluorine to chlorine in the etchant gas ranges between about 3:1 and about 0. 01:1; preferably, between about 0. 5:1 and about 0. 01:1; most preferably, between about 0. 25:1 and about 0. 1:1. The etchant gas forms a fluorine-comprising polymer or species which deposits on exposed surfaces adjacent to the silicon oxynitride-comprising layer in an amount sufficient to reduce the etch rate of an adjacent material (such as a photoresist) while permitting the etching of the silicon oxynitride-comprising layer.

Abstract:

A method and system for generating and searching a tree-structured index of window vectors that represent database sequences comprise a window vector generation module, a tree-structured index generation module, a query sequence partitioning module, and a retrieval component. The window vector generation module partitions a database sequence into a plurality of overlapping windows. Each window has a fixed length W comprising a fixed number of nucleotides, and the offset among windows is determined by a parameter. The window vector generation module then maps each database sequence window into a window vector. The database sequence window vector indicates the frequency of appearance of each k-tuple in the corresponding database sequence window. The tree-structured index generation module then generates a tree-structured index using the database sequence window vectors. The query sequence partitioning module partitions a query sequence into a plurality of windows and maps each query sequence window into a query sequence window vector.

Abstract:

A ring or collar surrounding a semiconductor workpiece in a plasma chamber. According to one aspect, the ring has an elevated collar portion having an inner surface oriented at an obtuse angle to the plane of the workpiece, this angle preferably being 135Â. This angular orientation causes ions bombarding the inner surface of the elevated collar to scatter in a direction more parallel to the plane of the workpiece, thereby reducing erosion of any dielectric shield at the perimeter of the workpiece, and ameliorating spatial non-uniformity in the plasma process due to any excess ion density near such perimeter. In a second aspect, the workpiece is surrounded by a dielectric shield, and the shield is covered by a non-dielectric ring which protects the dielectric shield from reaction with, or erosion by, the process gases. In a third aspect, the dielectric shield is thin enough to couple substantial power from the cathode to the plasma, thereby improving spatial uniformity of the plasma process near the perimeter of the workpiece. In a fourth aspect, azimuthal non-uniformities in process performance can be ameliorated by corresponding azimuthal variations in the dimensions of the elevated collar and/or the dielectric shield surrounding the workpiece.
