Abstract:The movement and mixing of microdroplets through microchannels is described employing silicon-based microscale devices, comprising microdroplet transport channels, reaction regions, electrophoresis modules, and radiation detectors. The discrete droplets are differentially heated and propelled through etched channels. Electronic components are fabricated on the same substrate material, allowing sensors and controlling circuitry to be incorporated in the same device.

Abstract:A method is disclosed for forming a brake rotor including a desired custom marking having a predetermined size and shape. The method includes applying a chemical treatment to a marking portion of a surface of the rotor. The marking portion has a size and shape corresponding to the predetermined size and shape of the desired custom marking. The chemical treatment is configured to affect, in a predetermined manner, an ability of a stimulus, to which the rotor is to be exposed, to alter properties of the rotor. The method also includes exposing the rotor, having the chemical treatment applied thereto, to the stimulus. The stimulus alters properties of the rotor at the marking portion differently than the stimulus alters properties of the rotor at other portions of the rotor adjacent the marking portion, thereby forming physical differences in the rotor, which, being visually perceptible, form the custom marking.

Abstract:A female die and a punch for forming relatively complex parts from axi-symmetrical workpieces, and the method of using the female die and punch to form the parts from the workpieces are disclosed. The female die and punch are used in a forging apparatus to near net warm forge parts that include curved surfaces with at least one protrusion offset from the longitudinal central axis of the part, or other complex part configuration. The female die includes curved inner surfaces that form the curved surfaces on the part and a recess to form the protrusion. The punch includes a forming surface at the bottom that is shaped to move material of the workpiece into regions of the cavity that form the protrusion. The volume of the part is substantially equal to the volume of the workpiece.

Abstract:A female die of a closed die set for use in near net warm forging a part includes a cavity having a tapered upper portion and a lower portion. The upper portion is configured to support a workpiece at a preliminary position in the cavity, and to cause the workpiece to be pre-bent as it is moved through the upper portion of the cavity by a punch. The lower portion has a constant length and width so that the workpiece remains in the pre-bent shape during movement through the lower portion to the bottom end of the cavity. The workpiece is finally formed at the bottom end of the cavity to produce the part.

Abstract:The present invention relates to polymer-based micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology suitable for the fabrication of integrated microfluidic systems, particularly medical and chemical diagnostics system, ink-jet printer head, as well as any devices that requires liquid- or gas-filled cavities for operation. The integrated microfluidic systems may consist of pumps, valves, channels, reservoirs cavities, reaction chambers, mixers, heaters, fluidic interconnects, diffusers, nozzles, and other microfluidic components on top of a regular circuit substrate. This technology is vastly superior than any alternatives available such as glass-based, polysilicon-based MEMS technology as well as hybrid `circuit board` technology because of its simple construction low cost, low temperature processing, and its ability to integrate any electronic circuitry easily along with the fluidic parts.
