Abstract:
A film-forming composition, typically a topcoat, having improved adhesion to certain commercially available adhesives. The composition includes a curable film-forming polymer, typically an acrylic and/or a polyester polymer, with carbamate and/or urea groups. The composition further includes a material containing one or more hydrolyzable silyl groups. The hydrolyzable silyl group-containing material optionally can be a polymeric or oligomeric. Also disclosed are a method of applying the above-described film-forming composition to a substrate and the coated article prepared by such a method.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a reaction product of reactants comprising: a) a polyisocyanate; b) a hydroxyalkyl carbamate; c) an aldehyde; and d) at least one monohydric alcohol. Additionally provided is a composition of matter comprising the structure: where Q is a multi-valent organic moiety containing urethane linkages; X is H, âCH OH, or âCH ORâ; Râ is an alkyl or aryl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms; and y is at least 2. The reaction product described above may have the structure (i). The reaction product and composition of matter are suitable for use as crosslinking agents in a variety of curable compositions further comprising at least one polymer having functional groups that are reactive with the crosslinking agent. Such curable compositions may be used as film-forming compositions.

Abstract:
A coating composition is provided comprising (a) a polymer containing reactive functional groups; (b) a curing agent having reactive functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups in the polymer in (a); and (c) a polymeric material different from (a) and (b) having functional groups. The functional groups in components (a) and (b) are more reactive with each other than with the functional groups in component (c) such that upon curing, at least a portion of the functional groups on component (c) remain unreacted. A coating layer formed from the composition upon application to a substrate has surface regions and a bulk region, and the concentration of component (c) at one or more surface regions is greater than the concentration of component (c) in the bulk region of the coating layer. The composition can be used in multi-layer composites containing two or more coating layers.
Multi-Layer Composites Formed From Compositions Having Improved Adhesion
Thermosetting compositions comprising an adhesion-promoting agent are disclosed. The adhesion-promoting agent is derived from boric acid or an equivalent and an ester having two or more functional groups that are derived at least in part from a 1,3-polyol.
