Abstract:
A power forecasting module determines a load forecast of a distribution system (DS) and a power generation forecast of distributed energy resources (DERs). A demand response (DR) module estimates an available DR based on the load and the power generation forecast and modifies the load forecast by dispatching an optimal DR. An energy storage commitment module determines a charging/discharging schedule of energy storage devices in the system based on the modified load profile and generates a second load profile by incorporating the charging/discharging schedule of energy storage devices. An unit commitment (UC) module determines a DER schedule of supplying electrical power to the loads in the second load profile based on a first objective function. An economic dispatch (ED) module determines an optimum operating point for each DER and an Integrated Volt-VAR Control (IVVC) module controls distribution assets to maintain a voltage profile in the system.

Abstract:
Method and system to provide co-optimized utilization of demand response and energy storage resources in an electrical grid system. The system may include a module to evaluate a marginal savings relative to a dispatch cost, if a demand response event is performed. The system may further include a module to evaluate a marginal savings relative to the dispatch cost, if an energy storage event is performed, and a controller including circuitry may be configured to determine a control strategy to perform a dispatch including a demand response event and/or an energy storage event, based at least in part on the respective marginal savings of the demand response event and/or the energy storage event, which may be selected to co-optimize an integrated utilization of the demand response and energy storage resources to meet a given objective.

Abstract:
A frequency regulation system includes a sensor to detect a power grid signal and a frequency deviation identification module to determine a power grid frequency deviation from the power grid signal. A demand response module identifies an operating schedule for available demand response resources based on frequency deviation set points and ramp rates and a load control module controls the available demand response resources based on the operating schedule.
Primary Frequency Control Through Simulated Droop Control With Electric Loads

International Classification:

Abstract:
In a frequency control system, a system controller assigns load-specific threshold frequencies to electrical loads of a fleet of electrical loads. Load controllers perform load monitoring and control operations for controlled electrical loads of the fleet including (i) comparing a measurement of the electrical frequency with the threshold frequency assigned to the controlled electrical load and (ii) operating the controlled electrical load based on the comparison. For example, each load controller may perform operation (ii) by turning the controlled electrical load on if the measurement of the electrical frequency is greater than the threshold frequency assigned to the controlled electrical load, and turning the controlled electrical load off if the measurement of the electrical frequency is less than the threshold frequency assigned to the controlled electrical load. The threshold frequencies may be assigned based on State of Charge (SOC) values for the loads.

Abstract:
A water heater that includes a cylindrical storage tank, at least one heating element, and at least one temperature sensor is modeled using a one-dimensional model that includes: a vertical stack of disks representing the water volume in the cylindrical storage tank, and a stack of annular segments surrounding the vertical stack of disks. The stack of annular segments represents the cylindrical wall of the cylindrical storage tank. The one-dimensional model may be used by a condition-based maintenance system comprising an electronic data processing device configured to detect a failure mode present in the water heater based on an output of the water heating model component. Some illustrative failure modes include insulation disturbance, heating element failure, excessive sediment buildup, or a drip tube rupture.

Abstract:
An electric water heater that includes a thermostat is retrofitted for remote control as follows. A relay is installed on an electrical feed to the electric water heater. Water temperature and electric current or power through the electrical feed are measured over time with the relay closed, and the thermostat deadband maximum and minimum are detected as the water temperature at which the thermostat turns the heating element off, and the water temperature at which the thermostat turns the heating element on, respectively. The detected thermostat deadband maximum and minimum are stored as load controller deadband maximum and minimum, respectively. The thermostat set point is raised, and the electric water heater is thereafter controlled using the load controller by operations including closing the relay when the water temperature falls below the load controller deadband minimum and opening the relay when the water temperature rises above the load controller deadband maximum.

Abstract:
A plurality of interactive electrical loads defines an aggregation connected with an electrical power grid. A scheduler generates a baseline power consumption schedule for the aggregation, determines frequency regulation capacity of the aggregation, and controls actual power consumption of the aggregation based on the baseline power consumption and an Automated Generation Control (AGC) signal of the electrical power grid to operate the aggregation as an ancillary frequency control device of the electrical power grid with the determined frequency regulation capacity. The controlling may comprise generating baseline dispatch signals for implementing the baseline consumption schedule, adjusting the baseline dispatch signals based on the AGC signal to generate adjusted dispatch signals, transmitting the adjusted dispatch signals to the plurality of interactive electrical loads defining the aggregation, and generating an AGC response log based on differences between the adjusted dispatch signals and the baseline dispatch signals.

Abstract:
A method for demand response management includes determining a number of available demand response events and a number of opportunities available to issue the available demand response events. A priority for each demand response event is provided and a threshold value for each demand response vent is determined. A highest priority demand response event among the available demand response events whose threshold value is lower than an observed value of a selected demand response trigger is selected and control signals to utilize the selected demand response event for a current opportunity are transmitted to customer sites.
