Abstract:

A system and method for lighting a surface, for example a deck of a boat, spa, swim spa, pool, watercraft or vehicle, using backlighting such that decorative or other desired patterns of light may be created by forming cuts, outlines, thin sections, or voids in an overlay that is applied to the lighted surface, allowing light to pass through or around portions of the overlay material. In an exemplary use of the system and method of the invention, the surface may be the surface of a boat or spa. The surface may comprise transparent or translucent materials, allowing light from a first side of the decking, or light that is generated within the decking, to pass through the decking and to emanate from a second decking side, where the light may be blocked, partially blocked, or allowed to pass through the overlay material in any desired pattern or shape.

Abstract:

A surface covering, which may be a non-skid covering such as a traction pad for use on a surface of a boat, kayak, watercraft, recreational vehicle, golf cart, pool deck, spa surface, swim spa surface, floor or wall surface, spa cabinet or other structure which has glow in the dark or photo-luminescent properties. The surface covering material may comprise one or more layers of material attached to each other. The surface covering material may comprise EVA foam, which may be routed. Photo-luminescent materials are applied to any surface of the surface covering. The photo-luminescent material may be mixed with a bonding agent prior to being applied to the surface covering. In an embodiment, photo-luminescent are applied to a route in the surface covering. The photo-luminescent materials may comprise a rare earth metal. The invention comprises a method for manufacturing the photo-luminescent surface covering.

Abstract:

A structure for retaining an object such as a lighting element, comprising a base structure having at least one surface and a retaining cavity disposed in a surface of the base structure, wherein the retaining cavity cross section comprises opposing tapered window retention surfaces and opposing bevel surfaces disposed between the surface opening and each of the opposing tapered window retention surfaces. A lighting element may be disposed in the retaining cavity. The retaining cavity may have a cross section that is complementary to a cross section of an object to be retained. A lighting system for a base structure comprising a plurality of stacked planar sheets, having a lighting element disposed between a top sheet and the next planar sheet below the top sheet in the stack of sheets, oriented such that a portion of the light emitted by the lighting element passes through said top sheet.
