Abstract:
A rechargeable battery having a user-selected charge capacity whereby a user of the battery can select the voltage at which the battery is charged, and thus can control the capacity of the battery. The battery has a rigid casing with an exterior surface thereof, and a rechargeable electrochemical cell within the casing. A plurality of charge contacts are accessible at the exterior surface of the casing and are in conductive contact with the electrochemical cell to allow charging of the electrochemical cell when a current is placed across the charge contacts. The battery also has a charge control circuit in conductive contact with at least the charge contacts and the electrochemical cell, and the control circuit includes a voltage regulator that regulates the charge voltage from the charge contacts to the electrochemical cell. A charge selector for the battery is accessible at the exterior surface of the casing and preferably selectively prevents the voltage regulator from regulating the charging of the electrochemical cell.

Abstract:
An electrochemical cell 10 includes first and second electrodes 12 and 14 with an electrolyte system 26 disposed therebetween. The electrolyte system includes at least a multilayered first polymeric region 28, having second layers 30 and 32, of a second polymer material. The second layers may absorb an electrolyte active species and to adhere the adjacent layer of electrode material to the electrolyte 26. The electrolyte system further includes a process for packaging and curing the electrolyte after it has been incorporated into a discrete battery device.
Conducting Polymer Electrodes For Energy Storage Devices And Method Of Making Same
A method for making high power electrochemical capacitors (20) provides for depositing an electrically conducting polymer (24) onto a metal substrate (22). The electrically conducting polymer is initially grown in the presence of a soft anion, i. e. , an anion having a high degree of polarizability. Subsequently, the polymer is treated with a relatively hard anion which at least partially replaces the soft anion in the polymer. The result is an electrochemical charge storage device which has enhanced electrochemical properties.

Abstract:
Structures (1, 21, 41, 71, 161) of electrochemical cells and electrochemical cell components employ a switch-like article (10, 26, 48, 63, 65, 68, 76, 166) comprised of an electrically conducting material that becomes nonconductive or semiconductive outside of a discrete voltage window. Said switch-like article serves as a reversible, self-regulating electrochemical switch at boundary voltages, thereby protecting the cell against over-charge and or over-discharge, and can be employed in a variety of configurations to provide self-regulating cell architectures. Cell assemblies that include said switch-like articles may themselves serve an auxiliary function as switches for other cells placed in series or parallel, and for external circuits.

Abstract:
An electrochemical cell assembly () includes a first cell and a second cell. The first cell can include a first anode () and a first cathode (), wound in a first jellyroll assembly () with a first jellyroll assembly exterior defined by the first cathode. The second cell can include a second anode () and a second cathode (), wound in a second jellyroll assembly () with a second jellyroll assembly exterior defined by the second anode. The first cell and the second cell can be arranged in a housing with the first jellyroll assembly exterior adjacent to the second jellyroll assembly exterior to improve energy density. The first cell assembly and the second cell assembly can have different widths to create differently shaped cell assemblies.

Abstract:
An assembly includes a receiver housing () defining a plurality of bays (). Each bay can be separated by a flexible connector section (). A plurality of electrochemical cells can be disposed in the plurality of bays. A first common conductor () can be coupled to each anode of each electrochemical cell, and a second common conductor () can be coupled to each cathode of the each electrochemical cell. A cover housing () can be coupled to the receiver housing to enclose the plurality of electrochemical cells in the plurality of bays. An exterior housing can be applied to form a wearable strap for, and to power, an electronic device ().

Abstract:
A mobile electronic device with an enhanced battery pack construction is shown. The mobile electronic device () includes: a housing () including a front housing () and a rear housing () having a reservoir area (); a user interface () connected to the front housing (); and a battery pack () including a planar inwardly facing surface () and a nonplanar outwardly facing surface (), the nonplanar outwardly facing surface () being substantially complementarily configured to be received in the reservoir area () of the rear housing (). Advantageously, this construction helps to provide a uniquely shaped mobile electronic device with enhanced ergonomics, adapted to be comfortably held in a user's hand and can conform to a user's palm. Advantageously, this construction is adapted to accommodating expansion and contraction of the battery pack (), when it comprises a Lithium Ion Polymer, in one embodiment.
