Abstract:
A hybrid vehicle and method of control include an internal combustion engine and at least one traction motor operated in an automatic mode such that the combined wheel torque is a function of accelerator pedal position and vehicle speed. In a select shift mode, wheel torque is also a function of a virtual gear number. The virtual gear number varies in response to driver activation of shift selectors or automatically in response to changes in vehicle speed. The vehicle transitions into select shift mode in response to driver activation of a downshift selector. When the transition occurs, an initial virtual gear number is selected to ensure that wheel torque increases.

Abstract:
A hybrid vehicle and method of control include an internal combustion engine and at least one traction motor operated such that engine speed is a function of vehicle speed and target engine power. Target engine power, in turn, is a function of target wheel torque, vehicle speed, and battery state of charge. Target wheel torque, in turn, is a function of vehicle speed and accelerator pedal position. In a select shift mode, these calculations are adjusted based on a virtual gear number which varies in response to driver activation of shift selectors. The adjustments result in decreased engine speed and decreased wheel torque when higher virtual gear number are selected for given accelerator pedal positions and vehicle speeds. The ratio of engine speed to vehicle speed is not necessarily constant when operating in select shift mode.
Management Of Transmission Transitions In Wheel Torque- Based Actuator Torque Determination System
Systems and control methods can provide for determining a TrnAin torque request from desired vehicle acceleration in a vehicle that utilizes a WTC architecture to allow for smooth transition between different transmission states, such as torque converter bypass clutch states and shifts between transmission gear ratios. The methods provide consistent and smooth vehicle acceleration profile during transmission state transitions. The methods also provide the ability to track the desired vehicle acceleration consistently from virtual driver demand sources, such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous vehicle, or remote parking, without allocating any additional resource to account for transmission state transitions. The proposed methods are applicable to any TC-based automatic transmission drivetrain, such as conventional powertrain, MHT, P4 HEV, or even BEV powertrains where the motor is located on the impeller side of a torque converter.

Abstract:
A vehicle includes a drive wheel, an engine, an accelerator pedal, a torque converter, a clutch, and a controller. The drive wheel is configured to propel the vehicle. The engine is configured to generate power and to deliver power to the drive wheel to accelerate the vehicle. The accelerator pedal is configured to generate an acceleration request based on a pedal position. The torque converter is disposed between the engine and the drive wheel. The clutch is disposed between the engine and the drive wheel and is configured to bypass the torque converter. The controller is programmed to, in response to depressing the accelerator pedal to a position that corresponds with accelerating the vehicle at a desired magnitude, adjust the torque of the engine to accelerate the vehicle at the desired magnitude, regardless of the state of the clutch.

A method for operating a vehicle that may be automatically stopped and started is described. In one example, the method includes starting an engine via expansion stroke combustion in response to a request to urgently start the engine. In addition, the method includes adjusting a position of a compression relief valve in response to a predicted urgency of an engine start.
Method And System For Adjusting Driver Demand Torque
Methods and systems are provided for adjusting driver demand wheel torque of a vehicle. The driver demand wheel torque may be adjusted as a function of accelerator pedal position. In particular, at low accelerator pedal positions, a lead-in region of an accelerator pedal position to driver demand wheel torque relationship is adjustable responsive to vehicle operation conditions so that “dead pedal” feel may be avoided.
