Abstract:

Back reflector arrays are applied to the surface distal to the incident light receiving surface of a thin film solar cell to increase its efficiency by altering the reflected light path and thereby increasing the path length of light through the active layer of the solar cell. The back reflector is an array of features of micrometer proportions. The feature may be concave or convex features such as hemispheres, hemi-ellipsoids, partial-spheres, partial-ellipsoids, or combinations thereof The feature may be pyramidal. A method of forming the back reflector array is by forming an array of features from a photocurable resin, subsequent curing the resin and metalizing the cured resin to render the surface reflective. The photocurable resin can be applied by inkjet printing or rolling or stamping with a mold.

Abstract:

Textured transparent layers are formed on the incident light receiving surface of thin film solar cells to increase their efficiency by altering the incident light path and capturing a portion of the light reflected at the MLA. The textured transparent layer is an array of lenses of micrometer proportions such as hemispheres, hemi-ellipsoids, partial-spheres, partial-ellipsoids, cones, pyramids, prisms, half cylinders, or combinations thereof. A method of forming the textured transparent layer to the light incident surface of the solar cell is by forming an array of lenses from a photocurable resin and its subsequent curing. The photocurable resin can be applied by inkjet printing or can be applied by roll to roll imprinting or stamping with a mold.

Abstract:

A method for forming a photovoltaic device by depositing at least one wetting layer onto a substrate where the wetting layer is ≦100 nm and sputtering a photovoltaic material onto the wetting layer where the wetting layer interacts with the photovoltaic material. Also disclosed is the related photovoltaic device made by this method. The wetting layer may comprise any combination of InSe, CuSe, CuSe, GaSe, InS, CuS, CuS, GaS, CuInSe, CuGaSe, InGaSewhere 0≦x≦2, CuInS, CuGaS, InGaSwhere 0≦x≦2, InSeSwhere 0≦x≦3, CuSeSwhere 0≦x≦2, CuSeS, (0≦x≦1), GaSeSwhere 0≦x≦3, and InGaSSwhere 0≦x≦2, 0≦y≦3. The photovoltaic material may be a CIGS (copper indium gallium diselenide) material or a variation of a CIGS material where a CIGS component is replaced or supplemented with any combination of sulfur, tellurium, aluminum, and silver.

A polymer comprising one or more chalcogenide elements and one or more crosslinking moieties. The crosslinking moieties may be organic, inorganic, or both. Also disclosed is the related method for making a polymer comprising purifying a chalcogenide polymer powder comprising one or more chalcogenide elements, melting the purified chalcogenide polymer powder, adding one or more crosslinking moieties to the melted chalcogenide polymer, and curing the modified chalcogenide polymer at a temperature between 150 and 200 C.

A composition of matter having a coated silicon substrate with multiple alternating layers of polydopamine and polyallylamine bound copper-indium-gallium oxide (CIGO) nanoparticles on the substrate. A related composition of matter having polyallylamine bound to CIGO nanoparticles to form PAH-coated CIGO nanoparticles. A related CIGO thin film made via conversion of layer-by-layer assembled CIGO nanoparticles and polyelectrolytes. CIGO nanoparticles are created via a flame-spray pyrolysis method using metal nitrate precursors, subsequently coated with polyallylamine (PAH), and dispersed in aqueous solution. Multilayer films are assembled by alternately dipping a substrate into a solution of either polydopamine or polystyrenesulfonate and then in the CIGO-PAH dispersion to fabricate CIGO films as thick as 1-2 microns.

A liquid crystal (LC) beam steerer includes a waveguide apparatus with a waveguide having a high-index core in contact with a variable-index liquid crystal (LC) cladding, wherein a voltage applied to the LC cladding is effective to steer a beam of light passing through the high-index core. A method for bonding infrared transparent materials by placing a polymer comprising at least one chalcogenide element and crosslinking moieties between infrared-transparent optical elements and applying heat, pressure, or both.
