How Conor Jackson (and others) might factor into Red Sox postseason run
So why did the Sox trade for Jackson and cash considerations in exchange for minor league pitcher Jason Rice just before August turned into September? In the eyes of his new team, he might be able to help fill a gap that was of some concern heading into postseason play. And, with the deadline to add
the night, however, the Sox had indeed added another piece -- a right-handed hitting outfielder-first baseman, Conor Jackson. Shortly after midnight, the Sox announced they had acquired the 29-year-old Jackson from the Oakland Athletics for minor league reliever Jason Rice and cash considerations.
The A's traded Jackson, a former Cal player who was their first baseman much of the season until Brandon Allen's emergence, to the AL East-leading Red Sox along with cash. Oakland received right-handed reliever Jason Rice, 4-5 with four saves and a 3.69 ERA at Triple-A Pawtucket.
As for the game, the Red Sox managed just one hit, coming on a Mike Cameron double. Starter Stolmy Pimentel took the loss, allowing two second-inning runs. Other Red Sox relievers pitching scoreless frames were Andrew Miller, Dan Wheeler, Jason Rice, Rich Hill, Michael Bowden and Jason Maxwell. Cole Hamels went four innings in his start for Philly.
