Abstract:

A framework identity database for receiving, storing, and sharing a user's personal information. The framework identity database operates in conjunction with a user interface and one or more associated application programs to receive a user's personal information. The user interface sends personal information to the framework identity database. New or previously stored personal information can also be sent to the framework identity database from one or more application programs or input devices associated with a computer or a network. The framework identity database creates and stores a user record including the personal information for later retrieval or modification. The framework identity database shares the personal information with the application programs. The application programs can then utilize the personal information to customize a user's experience when interacting with the application programs, such as features, commands, documents, templates, wizards, lists, preferences, and other output used to interact with a user. The framework identity database is further operative to maintain, to retrieve, and to store one or more user records associated with one or more user identities.

Abstract:

Integrating reference material directly into an application program, so that the information can be presented to a user. An application program initiates a request for information, such as a request for a definition of a word, an address, material related to the subject matter of a document, updated information or information tailored to a particular user. The request for information includes any necessary identifiers, such as a language identifier, key words, a unique identifier or a user identifier. A reference engine receives the request for information and selects the appropriate reference material source. The reference material source can be part of the system running the application program or can be external to the system. The reference engine accesses the appropriate reference material source and obtains the requested information. The information is returned to the application program which presents the information to the user in a manner that is helpful to the user.

Abstract:

Systems and methods for applying both profile and user customizations to an application user interface are provided. Profile customizations, created for a specialized use or field, are adapted to an application user interface, which has command-menu-toolbar contributions from various add-in modules. The user has access to the customizations through a user interface. Then, as a user is customizing the application, through commands, toolbars, and menus, the user customizations are tagged. A priority and group is assigned to each customization to allow for relative positioning of each customization. The difference between the user's final desired state and a reset state is computed. This difference computation is used to track the changes made to the application and to assist in resets of the customizations.

Various types of data can be collected into a data set and related content and/or related concepts across the data in the data set and/or across search histories can be displayed as a visual representation. The related content/concepts can be presented as a function of incremental revealing of relationships. Abstract:

Systems and methods are provided for navigating a graphical user interface, or GUI. A list may be invoked by a keyboard shortcut within an integrated development environment, or IDE, for software development wherein there are a number of items such as open files and development tools between which a user must navigate. The list appears in a navigation dialog that comprises the items such as open files, tool windows sorted in a most recently used, or MRU, order, and navigation of abstract views into the data. The list may be invoked by the user from the keyboard by pressing the “Ctrl-Tab” keys, for example, and holding down the “Ctrl” key. Once invoked, the user may navigate the list to select an item to open by using the arrow keys for, example, on the keyboard or pressing the “Tab” key again, for example, while holding down the key used to initially invoke the navigation dialog. Once the user selects the desired item, the navigation dialog may be dismissed by releasing the key used to invoke it.

Abstract:

Disclosed is a unique system and method that facilitates more efficient navigation and viewing of multiple open objects such as files, documents, pages, sheets, etc. The systems and methods make use of a navigation bar or tab channel. The tab channel can comprise a shifting region and optionally, a static region—the static region being positioned to the left of the shifting region. As files are opened, for example, the file name is appended to the left side of the tab channel. When another file is opened, it is appended to the left side of the tab channel, thus pushing the first file to the right. This proceeds so that the most relevant files are viewable in the tab channel. An on-screen menu is also maintained that includes all open files in an ordered manner. Thus, a file name no longer on the tab channel can be accessed from the menu—and then reinserted into the tab channel if viewing of its contents is desired.
