Abstract:

A process for preparing an improved pigment which is readily dispersible in paints and plastics concentrates is provided. In accordance with the process, a particulate pigment is mixed with water to form a slurry thereof, and a surface active agent is mixed with the slurry so that the pigment therein is coated therewith. A preferred surface active agent is a mixture of ethoxylated sorbitan derivatives, non-ethoxylated mono and diglycerides and ethoxylated mono and diglycerides. After the pigment has been coated with the surface active agent, the coated pigment is dried.

Abstract:

An improved process is described for manufacturing zirconia-treated titanium dioxide pigments, wherein the zirconia treatment is accomplished in the process of fluidizing a titanium dioxide filter or press cake and then drying the same, through the addition to the filter or press cake of one or more alkaline water-soluble zirconium reagents selected from ammonium zirconyl carbonate, the water-soluble ammonium zirconyl carboxylates and mixtures of these. Aqueous solutions of such zirconium reagents, in addition to being effective for imparting a zirconia surface treatment to the titanium dioxide materials, also prove to be effective fluidizing agents for forming high solids dispersions of the zirconia-treated titanium dioxide pigment materials which can be spray dried without substantial dilution and excessive energy requirements.

Abstract:

A process is disclosed for making titanium dioxide pigment particularly suited for dispersion in thermoplastics, in which the titanium dioxide pigment is recoverable from a slurry through the use of conventional vacuum-type and/or pressure-type filtration systems without the deposition of additional inorganic oxides and in the absence of added flocculating agents, and further in which the thus-recovered, washed and filtered pigment can be dried by spray drying, without the dilution required in the production of such pigments according to a prior art process likewise omitting the deposition of additional inorganic oxides to those formed in a vapor phase oxidation step providing the agglomerated titanium dioxide starting material and omitting any use of added flocculating agents.
