Abstract:

Methods and apparatus for managing information related to backup storage activities of data storage systems. In a computer system having one or more independent backup data storage systems coupled to each other and each serving one or more clients, a user may obtain information related to backup activities of any of the backup storage systems from a single location. Through a user interface associated with any of the backup storage systems, or through a stand alone user interface, a user may manage (e. g. , organize, display, print) information related to backup activities of any or all of the backup storage systems. System administrators can design and store a variety of report formats that may be utilized by any user to display or print various parameters associated with backup activities in a particular manner. Report formats may be edited by users, and displayed parameters may be dynamically updated to provide for active monitoring of one or more backup storage systems. Additionally, periodic backup activity reports can be generated and automatically sent to designated locations, for example to one or more printers and/or to one or more designated recipients via E-mail.

A backup reporting framework Graphical User Interface (GUI) comprises a combination of components that make it possible to display a Reporting GUI to the customer on the customer's desktop. The framework includes three main components, a server component, a wag-server middleware component, and a monitor server middleware component. The Server Component handles all the operations necessary to start the GUI or Command Line Interface (CLI) interaction with the Middleware Components. The WAG Server Middleware component provides a mechanism for the client application to interact with the server. The WAG Server component gives the client side applications access to data resident on the server and allow for command and control from the client side. The present invention comprises a generic mechanism for reporting on backup operations. An object is abstracted in order to provide a generic reporting object, and the generic reporting object is displayed by the reporting GUI. The GUI is thus provided for handling any object which is abstracted to the generic format. The generic format is applicable to any number of objects which would otherwise require the GUI to contain code specific for displaying the object.

Abstract:

A user selects one or more storage area network resources for purposes of viewing respective configuration information. Based on a respective selection by the user, a management control system determines whether it maintains corresponding configuration information associated with the selected one or more resources. If so, the management control system generates a respective configuration view for the user to view respective configuration information associated with the selected one or more resources. If not, the management control system identifies a remote server that manages the selected one or more resources and communicates with the remote server to convey a configuration view generated by the remote server through the management control system to the user for viewing on a display screen. Thus, the management control system can either serve the requested configuration information to a client or act as a proxy for retrieving and serving the requested configuration information to the user.
