Method And Apparatus For Providing A Caller Id Alias
A method and apparatus provide the capability of presenting alias information in place of public name information to support caller ID services. A calling party name database is modified to include alias information. The terminating local exchange carrier queries the network for calling party information. The appropriate information field within the database is accessed based on an indication of whether the calling party is selecting the public name or the alias information to be provided to the called party.
Method Of Notifying A Wireless Subscriber As To Call Payment Responsibilities
A method provides that a subscriber can receive calls through a wireless terminal whereby if the calls originate with one number the called party pays and if the calls originate with another number the calling party pays. Information is transferred to the wireless terminal so that a data field normally used to identify the calling party is used to indicate to the called party who has assumed responsibility for payment of the call.

Abstract:
A method for improving the sound quality of voice signals transmitted during a call between two digital wireless telephones by diverting the call from a circuit switched network to a data network is disclosed. In accordance with the present invention, a call setup procedure using the circuit switched network is modified so that the calling party may determine the following information: 1) whether the called partys digital wireless telephone is able to support one of the voice compression algorithms supported by the calling partys digital wireless telephone and 2) whether both wireless telephones have access to the same data network. If the called partys digital wireless telephone is able to support one of the voice compression algorithms supported by the calling partys digital wireless telephone and both wireless telephones have access to the same data network, the circuit switched network call setup procedure is abandoned before the called party answers the call and the call is completed using the data network. Completing the call by encoding voice signals using a common voice compression algorithm executed by the digital wireless telephones and by sending the encoded voice signals through a data network eliminates the drawbacks associated with the additional intermediate encoding which would have been required if the call had been completed using the circuit switched network.

Public Safety Access Point (Psap) Selection For E911 Wireless Callers In A Gsm Type System
Public safety access points are selected in a wireless network for E911 calls based on ESRD substitution when ESRKs are not being used. The present invention was conceived as an ESRK workaround solution to implement Phase II of the E911 rules from the starting point of a Phase I implementation. ESRKs, ESRDs or ESRVs are initially obtained and managed for each PSAP in a particular carrier's area. Then, Phase I processes are modified to wait to see if Phase II GSM location information will be reported in a timely manner (e. g. , within a second or two or so) before committing to a default selection of a particular PSAP based on information available (e. g. , based on the location of a serving cell site).
