Abstract:

An implantable medical device having a concave ceramic housing component; a concave metal housing component attached to the ceramic housing component to form a hermetically sealed enclosure; and an electronic trans-housing magnetic flux component disposed within the enclosure. Another aspect of the invention provides an implantable medical device having a ceramic housing component; a metal housing component; a circumferential sealing member attached to a periphery of the ceramic housing component and to a periphery of the metal housing component to form a hermetically sealed enclosure; and an electronic trans-housing magnetic flux component disposed within the enclosure. Still another aspect of the invention provides an implantable medical device with a first metal housing component; a second metal housing component, the second metal housing component forming an opening; a ceramic housing component disposed in the opening, the first metal housing component, the second metal housing component and the ceramic housing component cooperating to form a hermetically sealed enclosure; and an electronic trans-housing magnetic flux component disposed within the enclosure.

Abstract:

Apparatus and methods to hold and manipulate dental floss for the removal of plaque and food particles from teeth surfaces. The invention comprises: an elongated handle which may house, contain, and dispense a supply of dental floss; a stationary tong which does not generally move with respect to the handle; a pivotal tong which can be pivoted about a pivot point; means for securing the pivotal tong to the handle to selectively adjust the distance between terminal ends of the stationary tong and the pivotal tong; and means for anchoring the dental floss to the terminal ends of the stationary and pivotal tongs, the dental floss being positioned to span the distance and be pulled taut between the terminal ends of the tongs. Means for guiding the length of dental floss along the stationary and pivotal tongs and/or means for cutting the dental floss may also be provided.

Abstract:

A method and system for management of thermal energy produced during transcutaneous energy transmission to provide power to energize implanted medical devices. A phase changing material (PCM) acts as a heat sink to absorb thermal energy generated during the energy transfer process. The PCM can be thermally coupled to tissue proximate to an implanted medical device, enabling heat generated within the implantable device to be absorbed. The generation of heat during the energy transfer process is primarily caused by eddy currents induced in the implantable device by the magnetic flux produced by the energy transfer system. The PCM can also be used to absorb heat generated by the device producing the magnetic flux that is used to transcutaneously transfer electrical power to recharge a rechargeable power source or energize the implanted medical device.
