Former NASA scientist Jerome Pearson helped designed a lightweight, towing-cable-like craft called the ElectroDynamic Debris Eliminator, or EDDE, which would use the planet's magnetic pull to corral space junk into a net. Jerome Pearson, the president of Star Technology, said it would take only a few years and a few hundred million dollars for a fleet of EDDEs to clean up the near-Earth neighborhood. (Others suspect that it would take longer and cost more.)

surprisingly simple method in order to fix a highly-complex problem that has been over a half century in the making: nets. According to Star president Jerome Pearson, each EDDE would be powered by solar and magnetic energy and would launch nets into space in order to capture pieces of orbital debris.

Want to Get Rid of Space Junk? Catch It in a Giant Net
would capture orbital debris in a net, then drag the junk down out of harm's way. The EDDEs would draw their power from the sun and from Earth's magnetic field rather than rely on costly chemical propellants, helping keep costs down, said Jerome Pearson, president of Star Technology and Research, Inc.
