Abstract:

A shaped charge with enhanced performance is provided. In a disclosed embodiment, an oilwell perforator includes a liner which is formed of a metal powder. The metal powder has particles thereof which are coated with metal. The metal powder may be tungsten, and the particles may be coated with metals such as copper, lead, molybdenum, tin, nickel or silver. The resulting liner content by weight may be between approximately 95 and 100% tungsten.

Abstract:

A unique phasing pattern is provided that maximizes the effective perforation geometry of a wellbore. The improvement overcomes the problems associated with multi-phase guns of the past that failed to account for the fact that the gun rested on the low side of the casing. In one embodiment of the present invention, the phasing is arranged so that there is a zero phase tunnel formed. The zero phase tunnel is located at approximately the location where the gun rests against the low side of the well. Further, tunnels are formed by shape charges at plus and minus forty-five degrees and at plus and minus ninety degrees. This can also be referred to as a penta-phase. In another embodiment of the invention, charges can also be placed to allow for a plus and minus one hundred and thirty-five degrees pattern in addition to the penta-phase pattern described above. This expanded pattern can also be referred to as a hepta-phase pattern. By improving the phasing pattern of the perforation gun, valuable hydrocarbon fluids will encounter less resistance to flow into the well.

An improved capsule-type charge for use in perforating high temperature production zones in oil or gas wells is disclosed. The improvement consists of using a secondary initiating compound as an initiator, such as 1,3,5-Trinitro-2,4,6-Tripicrylbenzene or 2,2',2",4,4',4",6,6',6",-Nonanitroterphenyl. These initiators work well with commercially available high temperature explosives, such as PYX.

Abstract:

A potentiometer and switch assembly wherein the potentiometer resistance is deposited on a circuit board. The control member of the assembly comprises a shaft having a rotor mounted thereon, attached to which is a wiper for contacting the resistance. The switch mechanism includes a cam shaft adapted to be engaged by the rotor whenever the control shaft is pushed. The cam shaft is positioned to the side of the rotor and is rotated through a predetermined angle each time the control shaft is pushed. Camming surfaces on the cam shaft contact one member of the switch contact pair to alternately cause that contact pair member to open and close the switch. The cam shaft may be arranged to contact a second switch contact pair which opens and closes oppositely to the first switch contact pair so that a three-way switching function may be effectuated.

Abstract:

A detonator system for borehole systems which include detonating cord exposed to borehole fluids, pressures and temperatures. A firing head has a sealed chamber for an electrically fired detonator and has a booster charge holder forming part of the seal. The chamber is sealed by a wire line firing sub and by the booster holder. The charge holder includes a bulkhead separating the detonator chamber from a booster charge chamber and providing part of the detonator chamber seal. The detonator explosive and the booster charge are positioned on opposite sides of the bulkhead so that upon detonation of the detonator, the bulkhead is ruptured and the explosion transfers to the booster charge and from it to the detonating cord. The firing head includes holes for attachment of borehole tools such as perforating guns or back off tools to be fired by the detonating cord.
