Abstract:

The sorting device is providing for sorting container components from a random orientation in about three axes of the container components to a sorted orientation which may be random about one axis of the container component. The apparatus includes a conveyor which extracts container components from a storage receptacle with the withdrawn components being oriented randomly about two axes. An ejector device is provided that will sense the orientation of the container components about one axis and eject those which are improperly oriented.

Abstract:

An apparatus is provided for performing certain manufacturing operations on a container such as forming a beaded rim around the upper open end of the container. The apparatus includes means for dispensing rimless containers into container-receiving receptacles which are mounted on a rotatable turret which moves the containers from one station to another station of the apparatus. Gripping means is provided to retain the containers within the receptacles and bead-forming means is also provided and is operable to form a bead on the upper disposed edge of the container. Ejection means is also provided for ejecting a finished container from a receptacle.

Abstract:

An apparatus is provided for making a container having a tubular side wall by wrapping a blank around a mandrel to form a tubular side wall wherein a pair of wrapping wings are rotated about the axis of the mandrel by respective drive means. The drive means comprises a pair of coaxial shafts with a respective wrapping means operably connected thereto. The drive means further includes means for rotating the shafts wherein one shaft ceases rotation before the other shaft so that movement of one wing terminates before movement of the other wing whereby side marginal portions of a side wall blank can be overlapped for bonding. The drive means for rotating the shafts is such that there is a lost motion mechanism to permit the differential movement between the wings.

Abstract:

An apparatus is provided for individually feeding blanks from a source of blanks to a point of use. The apparatus includes a feeding apparatus which has a portion thereof engageable with a side wall blank contained in the stack and feed same onto a conveyor and then to a second transfer mechanism which conveys the side wall blank to a point of use. The feeding apparatus is comprised of a mechanism which basically is comprised of a four-link arm arrangement wherein a throat-forming member is maintained in a substantially vertical plane throughout pivoting movement of the arm arrangement thereby maintaining a side wall blank in a feed position. An elevator means is also provided which has a storage magazine and is positioned below the feeding apparatus. The elevator means includes a pair of elevators which work jointly so the elevator means can be reloaded while the feeding apparatus is still running without requiring a shutdown of the equipment to fill the magazine.

Abstract:

An apparatus for forming a container is provided wherein the container is comprised of a side wall having a top bead and also a bottom member secured to the side wall with the side wall being formed from a blank which is wrapped with convolute form having side marginal portions overlapped and secured together. The apparatus includes means for forming the bottom member from a bottom member blank with the formed bottom member being carried by conveying means to various stations of the apparatus. A side wall feeder feeds side wall blanks through a side wall heater and to the conveying means for conveying thereby. A side wall wrapper is provided to wrap the side wall blank in convolute form about a mandrel and bottom member and secure overlapping marginal portions. A heater is provided to heat a bottom portion of the side wall blank and the bottom member so that same can be secured together during a container bottom forming operation by a bottom former which rolls a bottom portion of the side wall blank in overlapping relation to a skirt on the bottom member and then a bottom crimper is provided for finishing the bottom. The container in this form is then transferred to another conveying means which is operable to convey the partially completed container to a bead-forming means for forming a bead on the upper edge of the container.

Abstract:

An apparatus for applying sealant to a side seam in a container sidewall formed by overlapping portions of the sidewall is provided. The apparatus includes conveying means operable for moving a container into and away from a sealing station. Sensing means is located adjacent the conveying means and is operable for sensing the rotational position of a container sidewall. Drive means is operable for selectively rotating a container to a predetermined rotational position. A sealant dispensing means is positioned adjacent the conveying means at the sealing station and is operable for dispensing sealant onto the seam along substantially the entire length of the seam by a movement of the dispensing means relative to the container. A second sealant dispensing means and station can be provided adjacent the conveying means for applying sealant to a seam between a bottom member and the sidewall of the container.

Abstract:

An improved multi-station machine is disclosed for assembling ring-type closures from generally cylindrical paperboard cylinders and generally circular paperboard discs. The machine employs a rotatable dial plate, carrying eight mandrels and an improved ring clamping system, which dial plate is incrementally rotated by an automatic indexer assembly relative to the various operating stations which consist of a ring feed station, a disc feed station, an adhesive dispensing station, a curling station, a grooving station and a closure ejecting station. Means are provided for controlling the operation of the various stations so that they operate in substantial synchronism with one another and with the rotatable dial plate. The improved disc feed station automatically feeds the lowermost disc from a stack of discs to a position over a ring on the dial plate and simultaneously forms a peripheral skirt on the disc and positions it in an open end of the ring. The adhesive dispensing station employs a pair of tube pumps to dispense adhesive and lubricant on partially assembled ring-type closures.
