Abstract:
A knock detection module for an engine comprises a statistics storage module and a processing module. The statistics storage module stores M times N vibration profiles corresponding to M zones of operation of the engine and N cylinders of the engine, wherein M and N are integers greater than one. The processing module determines in which one of the M zones the engine is operating and determines whether knock has occurred for one of the N cylinders by comparing measured vibration data with a selected one of the vibration profiles corresponding to the one of the M zones and the one of the N cylinders.

Abstract:
A method for determining the state of charge (SOC) of a lithium ion battery is provided. The method leverages a circuit model of the lithium ion battery, and generates four battery parameters from which the SOC is derived.

Abstract:
A method for rapidly determining an initial diffusion voltage (V)as a starting point in calculating a diffusion voltage in an electro-chemical cell (e. g. , a battery used in an automotive vehicle) includes obtaining a time difference tbetween a time when the cell was last turned-OFF and a time when the cell was next turned-ON, selecting a starting diffusion voltage (V)based on t, determining a trial diffusion voltage Vbased on a diffusion circuit model and (V), calculating an error voltage V=(V)−|V−V| where Vand Vare cell voltages at turn-OFF and turn-ON respectively, repeating the foregoing determining and calculating steps using for each iteration (V)=(V)+Vuntil Vis less than or equal to a first predetermined tolerance amount ε, storing in a memory a value of Vcorresponding to the condition V≦ε, and setting (V)equal to the just stored value of V. A further diffusion voltage Vis then determined using the same diffusion circuit model and the just obtained (V)and is advantageously used by a controller in an electric propulsion vehicle to determine a state of charge of the propulsion battery.

Abstract:
An embodiment contemplates a method for estimating a capacity of a battery. A state of charge is determined at a first instant of time and at a second instant of time. A difference in the state of charge is determined between the first instant of time and the second instant of time. A net coulomb flow is calculated between the first instant of time and the second instant of time. The battery capacity is determined as a function of the change in the state of charge and the net coulomb flow.

Methods and systems for determining a state of charge of a battery are provided. A first component of the state of charge is calculated based on a first property of the battery. A second component of the state of charge is calculated based on a second property of the battery. The first component of the state of charge is weighted based on a rate of change of the first property relative to a change of the state of charge. The second component of the state of charge is weighted based on a rate of change of the second property relative to a change of the state of charge. The state of charge is determined based on the first and second weighted components.

Abstract:
A method for estimating vehicle battery parameters that uses two different sampling rates. The method samples a battery terminal voltage and current at a high sampling rate to estimate the battery open circuit voltage and high frequency resistance. The battery state of charge (SOC) is derived from the open circuit voltage. Next, the battery terminal voltage and current are re-sampled at a low sampling rate. Other battery parameters can be extracted from the low-rate sampled signals. Next, all of the battery parameters that were obtained from the two sampling rates are used together to predict battery power.

Japan Earthquake: Doomsday? Or Just a Restless Earth?
Last year's earthquake in Haiti was "large but not huge," in the words of Jian Lin of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution -- but it just happened to be centered beneath the impoverished capital city of Port-au-Prince. It also was on a fault line that had been relatively quiet for 200 years.
