Abstract:

A system and method for providing chat group services to wireless mobile terminals is disclosed. The chat forum permits integrated voice and text messaging. The system includes plural mobile terminals, each being capable of running a chat client application. A server complex is connected to one or more wireless carrier networks by way of a packet-based network, such as the Internet. The server complex includes server applications and components for supporting the chat group services and communicating with the chat clients on the mobile terminals. The system also includes features that permit the integration of legacy mobile terminals, communication with machine interfaces using a chat metaphor, and robustness and reliability of operation across various wireless operators.

Abstract:

A system and method for presenting chat group sessions at wireless mobile terminals is disclosed. The system includes plural wireless mobile terminals, each having a display screen. Each mobile terminal is capable of displaying a chat conversation that is updated in near real-time so that messages in the conversation progressively scroll on the screen. In addition, at least one of the mobile terminals is configured to present a text edit area on a portion of it screen while showing the chat conversation on another portion of the screen. A text editor resident in the mobile terminal permits a user to compose a message in the text edit area while simultaneously viewing the chat conversation as it progresses. The message can be a response to the conversation currently being displayed.

Abstract:

A single content region in a chat history display is used to display entries representative of a plurality of messages corresponding to all chat histories for all of chat threads currently engaged in by a given mobile terminal. Additionally, a buddy list display supports management of chat buddies, a detail view display allows otherwise truncated messages to be displayed, and a text message editor display supports the composition of text messages. Each chat user may designate public display identifiers for purposes of identification to other chat users. Additionally, each user may designate private display identifiers for each of his/her buddies, which private display identifiers may be used to replace the public display identifiers for that user's buddies when displayed on the user's mobile terminal. In this manner, the use of speech and text based group chatting and similar services in wireless communication environments is more readily enabled.

An intermediate service provider operates to mediate communications between mobile terminals and various service providers. In one embodiment, the intermediate service provider and a given mobile terminal establish a persistent session supported by a logical communication channel that is used to convey communications for all of the various service applications implemented by the mobile terminal, i. e. , a single, multiplexed channel. In another embodiment, common command subsystems are used to support the multiple service applications, thereby reducing overhead resulting from multiple protocol headers. In yet another embodiment, establishment of communications with various service providers begins with a single connection request message that specifies at least two selected service applications such that the intermediate service provider can establish communications with the multiple service providers in response to the single connection request message.

A push notification server operates on a client device to manage push notifications that the client device receives from various push servers. In some embodiments, the push notification server may receive a notification message on behalf of an application and determine how to handle the notification message based on whether the application is operating on the client device.
