Abstract:

A method for determining the signal constellation of a received signal establishes a moment based on each waveform, squares the moment, fourth powers the moment, divides the fourth power by the square to obtain a ratio, and compares the ratio to a threshold. If the ratio is less than threshold, the signal constellation corresponds to a first type, and if greater than the threshold, the signal constellation corresponds to a second type. The method can be generalized to a magnitude mean in place of a second moment.

Abstract:

Method and system for determining chemical composition of a single-component or multiple-component gas, using a discharge holdoff mechanism. A voltage difference V between two spaced apart electrodes is brought to a selected value and held, the holdoff time interval Δt(V;ho) required before gas discharge occurs is measured, and the associated electrical current or cumulative electrical charge is measured. As the voltage difference V increases, the time interval length Δt(V;ho) decreases monotonically. Particular voltage values, Vand V, correspond to initial appearance of discharge (Δt≈∞) and prompt discharge (Δt≈0). The values Vand Vand the rate of decrease of Δt(V;ho) and/or the rate of increase of current or cumulative charge with increasing V are characteristic of one or more gas components present.

Abstract:

A logging while drilling tool includes a directional resistivity antenna and an antenna shield having. The shield has at least one slot having at least one electrically open end formed therein. The antenna shield may include a base portion and a plurality of spaced apart fingers extending away from the base portion such that the finger ends are electrically isolated from the tool body and from one another. The antenna shield may alternatively include a plurality of spaced apart plates that are electrically isolated from the tool body and from one another. These antenna shields have been found to provide suitable physical protection for sensitive antenna components while at the same time being substantially transparent to both z-mode and x-mode electromagnetic waves.

A method for correcting subterranean resistivity measurements to account for tool bending includes processing at least one coupling component and at least one cross-coupling component in combination with a tool bending angle.
