Abstract:

A nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) method and probe for generating RF magnetic fields in different directions to distinguish NQR from acoustic ringing induced in a sample. Generally, an RF magnetic field is generated along an axis towards a sample to induce a resonance signal in the sample. The resonance signal includes NQR and acoustic ringing. The resonance signal is detected along the RF magnetic field axis. The acoustic ringing is detected along a direction orthogonal to the RF magnetic field axis. As a result, the NQR in the resonance signal can be distinguished from the acoustic ringing in the resonance signal.

Abstract:

An NQR apparatus for irradiating a sample with an RF magnetic field and for determining the presence of a target material by detecting an NQR signal includes a transmitter for generating an output signal at a selected frequency, a receiver for detecting the NQR signal, a probe, and a switch coupling the receiver and the transmitter with the probe for alternately connecting and disconnecting the receiver and the transmitter to the probe, thereby switching the NQR apparatus between a transmitting mode and a receiving mode. The probe consists of a resonant circuit that includes a coil array. The coil array includes a first figure-8 coil and a partially overlapping, second figure-8 coil for generating an RF magnetic field in a detecting region outside the probe. The first and second coils together alternate between a transmitting mode for irradiating a sample in the detecting region with an RF magnetic field, and a receiving mode for detecting an NQR signal indicative of the presence of a target material in the sample. The coil array produces a highly uniform rotating RF magnetic field, increasing its detection sensitivity and enhancing its ability to separate magnetic resonance signals from piezoelectric and acoustic ringing.

Abstract:

An apparatus using nuclear magnetic or quadrupole resonance to detect selected nuclei in a specimen (e. g. , specimens containing a class of explosives or narcotics). The apparatus includes a pulsing unit to generate an RF pulse or a train of pseudo-random RF pulses used in stochastic NQR. Each of the pulses has an RF signal reaching a full amplitude within a quarter-cycle (substantially no pulse rise delay) and having a recovery delay of less than Q/. pi. cycles (substantially no recovery delay). The apparatus also includes a transmitter (e. g. , a coil) to irradiate the specimen with a train of pseudo-random RF pulses and to detect after each pulse a resonance signal generated by the specimen in response to each corresponding pulse of the train of pseudo-random RF pulses. The pulsing unit has a capacitor connected to a DC power source by a first switch and connected to the coil by a second switch. When the first switch is closed, the DC power source charges the capacitor.

Materials are imaged by exciting only one volume of interest (VOI) at a t while leaving the other undisturbed. By switching the irradiation frequency and probe tuning to the next VOI, the time delay between acquisitions of different VOI's may be essentially eliminated. The present invention may be implemented using a new coil design which is also useful for microscale planar imaging.

Abstract:

A nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) apparatus which includes a probe and a variable impedance spectrometer. The probe emits a signal towards a specimen which causes the specimen to produce a resonance signal. After a recovery period from emitting the signal, the probe receives the resonance signal produced by the specimen. The variable impedance spectrometer is connected to the probe and has a total Q factor therewith. The spectrometer causes the total Q factor during the recovery period to be lower than the total Q factor before and after the recovery period by varying the impedance of the spectrometer, without changing the electrical configuration of the probe.

Abstract:

Techniques for secure mobile payment are provided. A credit or gift card is registered for additional security, such that a secure identifier or personal identification number (PIN) is required for use of the credit or gift card. Registration is not required or even known by the third-party payment service associated with the card. Subsequently, when a consumer attempts to use the card and before payment instructions are sent to the corresponding third-party payment service, the secure identifier or PIN is requested and verified. If properly verified, the payment instructions are forwarded for processing by the third-party payment service.
