Active Oxygen Scavenger Compositions And Their Use In Packaging Articles
Paul J. Cahill - Wheaton IL Joel A. Richardson - Naperville IL George E. Rotter - Naperville IL Granville L. Smyser - Naperville IL Raymond V. Wass - Glen Ellyn IL Walter M. Nyderek - Tinley Park IL
Active oxygen scavenging compositions and their use in packaging articles are disclosed. The compositions are all plastic materials and are typically deployed as at least one layer in a multi-layered wall of a packaging article such as a bottle, can or film. The compositions are usually used in conjunction with added transition metal catalyst to enhance the uptake of oxygen. Use of the compositions and package constructions disclosed serves to lengthen the shelf life of packaged oxygen sensitive substances and/or diminish the need for refrigeration of the packages.

Abstract:
Compositions for scavenging oxygen are disclosed. These compositions comprise copolyamides comprising over 50 weight percent polyamide segments and an active oxygen scavenging amount of polyolefin oligomer segments. The polyamide segments comprise segments derived from typical bottling and packaging polyamides such as polyhexamethyleneadipamide and polyphthalamides. The copolymers are preferably formed by transesterification during reactive extrusion and typically comprise about 0. 5 to about 12 wt. % of polyolefin oligomer segments. The copolyamides provide enhanced active and passive oxygen barrier properties over similar polyester constructions and similar polyamide constructions, when used in a laminar construction. In a series of preferred embodiments, multi-layered bottles fabricated with the oxygen scavenging copolyatnides of this invention are about 99. 8 wt. % polyamide and suitable for recycle with other polyamide bottles.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for blocking a bar code in a package includes a carrier with a plurality of apertures. The carrier is formed with a plastic material containing an absorbing dye and a fluorescing dye so that a bar code on each container is not readable by a bar code scanner.

Abstract:
A system and apparatus for ensuring a proper bar code scan on a multi-package of containers includes overcoating bar codes on each respective container with a dye and applying a unitizing carrier to the containers. The containers may also be oriented so that a bar code on each container is not readable by a bar code scanner.
Crystalline Polyamide Composition From Dicarboxylic Acid Mixture And Diamine

Abstract:
Novel crystalline polyamides having high heat deflection temperatures when filled are prepared from aliphatic diamines and either mixtures of terephthalic acid and adipic acid or mixtures of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid and adipic acid. The mole ratio of aliphatic diamine to terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, and adipic acid is in the range of about 100:65-95:25-0:35-5. The polyamides can be filled with about 10 to about 60 parts by weight of a filler. The mechanical properties of these polyamides are largely unaffected by absorbed water.
