  • Solid Fuel Afterburner And Method Of Using The Same To Improve Thrust And Starting Capabilities Of A Turbojet Engine

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6370861, Apr 16, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jul 7, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/612161
  • Inventors:
John William Box - Coral Gables FL
  • Assignee:
Locust USA, Inc. - Miami FL
  • International Classification:
    F02C 1310
  • US Classification:
    60 3902, 60253, 60251
  • Abstract:
A turbojet engine includes a housing having a forward inlet nozzle, an aft exhaust nozzle, a combustion chamber therebetween, a compressor between the inlet nozzle and the combustion chamber, and a turbine between the combustion chamber and the exhaust nozzle. A liquid fuel injector is provided to inject atomized or vaporized fuel into the chamber for combustion therein. In addition, a solid fuel is provided in the aft exhaust nozzle. The solid fuel may be used to assist the starting of the engine, particularly useful under adverse starting conditions. That is, when the compressor begins to spin up to pump air through the engine, the solid fuel in the exhaust nozzle is ignited by an igniter which begins to combust with the oxygen rich air introduced by the compressor. This combustion increases the temperature in the entire engine, such that when liquid fuel is injected in the combustion chamber, the temperature is sufficiently high to allow the liquid fuel to burn in a self-sustaining manner. Thus, the engine is ignited from the back, and after ignition, the solid fuel continues to burn providing an afterburner effect boosting the thrust until the solid fuel is depleted.
  • Turbine Engine With Solid Fuel Starter

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6374592, Apr 23, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jul 7, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/612162
  • Inventors:
John William Box - Coral Gables FL
Alberto Francisco Araujo - Miramar FL
  • Assignee:
Locust USA, Inc. - Miami FL
  • International Classification:
    F02C 726
  • US Classification:
    60 3902, 60 39141, 60 39142, 60 39464
  • Abstract:
A quantity of solid fuel is attached to the inside of the combustion chamber of the turbine. When the engine begins a starting sequence, a starter begins spinning the compressor and an air flow is pumped through the engine. The solid fuel is then heated by a heater element until the solid fuel begins to burn. The combustion of the solid fuel increases the temperature of the combustion chamber so that when, thereafter, an atomized or vaporized liquid fuel is injected, the temperature within the combustion chamber is sufficient to allow the liquid fuel to burn in a self-sustaining manner.
  • Flexible Guidewire

    view source
  • US Patent:
    48461865, Jul 11, 1989
  • Filed:
    Jan 12, 1988
  • Appl. No.:
    7/143008
  • Inventors:
John W. Box - Miami FL
James V. Donadio - Natick MA
  • Assignee:
    Cordis Corporation - Miami FL
  • International Classification:
    A61B 600
  • US Classification:
    128657
  • Abstract:
A guidewire suited for inserting both diagnostic and therapeutic catheters. The guidewire has an initial uniform diameter segment that is coated with Telfon along a majority of its length. This core station tapers along a uniform portion to a second constant diameter segment surrounded by a flexible spring tip. The core again tapers in a region where the flexible spring separates from the core. The core is then flattened to increase flexibility within the flexible spring and the flattened core and spring are brazed together at a extreme distal tip portion to form a hemispherical distal guidewire tip.

  • International Classification:
    A61B 1000
  • US Classification:
    128751
  • Abstract:
Surgical instruments for insertion through trocar tubes are disclosed. The instruments broadly include: a hollow tube; a clevis which is formed separately from the tube with the distal end of the hollow tube crimped around the proximal end of the clevis, and with the clevis including a pivot pin; at least one end effector element having a pivot hole through which the pivot pin of the clevis is pivotally engaged, and another through-hole; a push rod extending at least partially through the hollow tube and mechanically coupled to the end effector element; and a plastic actuator engaging the proximal end of the push rod and for imparting reciprocal motion to the push rod relative to the tube, where the reciprocal motion is translated at the clevis into pivotal motion of the end effector element. Preferably, staple-like connectors are used to mechanically couple the end effector element to the push rod, especially for double acting instruments. The end effector elements are preferably formed of investment cast bronze.

  • Assignee:
    Symbiosis Corporation - Miami FL
  • International Classification:
    A61B 1700
  • US Classification:
    606205
  • Abstract:
Connecting elements are disclosed for a laparoscopic surgical instrument. Each connecting element engages a reciprocally movable push rod having a first through-hole and a pivotally rotatable end effector having a second through-hole. The connecting element is preferably a resilient staple-like element having a first terminal portion configured to pivotally engage the first through-hole in the push rod, an oppositely extending second terminal portion configured to pivotally engage the second through-hole in the end effector, and a substantially U-shaped middle portion coupling the first and second terminal portions. Where a double acting surgical instrument is used, two connecting elements are required. For improved stability, the connecting elements of the double acting surgical instrument can be crossed.

The end effector blade has an aperture for engaging either the push rod or a connecting staple which couples the push rod of the instrument to the end effector blade. The end effector blade has a body member having a sharp edge element and a base element integral with integral first and second masses of bronze. The base element is an extended portion substantially parallel to and in an offset configuration with the sharp edge portion, and includes an aperture to which the push rod or connecting staple couples. The first mass of bronze integral with the investment cast end effector blade bridges the offset configuration between the sharp edge element and the base element. The second mass of bronze integral with the investment cast blade partially surrounds the aperture of the base element and extends to the end of the base element remote from the sharp edge portion.
