Abstract:

This disclosure depicts an electron gun especially for use in a color cathode ray tube of the small-neck, shadow-mask type. The gun design is also applicable to other television cathode ray tube displays that require a gun that provides small, symmetrical spots of uniform cross-section, such as guns used in monochrome television and beam index tubes. The gun is comprised essentially of a four-element tetrode section and a main focus lens section. The tetrode section generates at least one electron beam and a cross-over that is imaged on the screen of the tube focused by the main focus lens. The tetrode section is characterized by having a strong prefocus; that is, a prefocus in which the electron trajectories are substantially refracted, or bent, before exiting the tetrode section. The tetrode section has two associated grid means whose dimensions, configurations, and relative spacings, in combination with a strong electrostatic prefocusing field produced between said grids, forms in the grid interspace an electrostatic field which includes in the region of the beam strongly bent, preferably substantially hyperboloidal equipotential lines which help to suppress spherical aberration commonly associated with a highly refractive tetrode section design.

Abstract:

An electron gun system according to the invention comprises means including cathode means for developing an electron beam. Main focus lens means, which has a plurality of electrode means situated on a common axis, provide for receiving the electron beam and forming a focused electron beam spot at the screen of the tube. Means are provided for developing and applying to the electrode means potentials effective to form one or more focusing field components between the electrode means. The lens means is so structured and arranged as to cause to be formed between adjacent electrode means at least one focusing field component which is asymmetrical and effective to significantly divert a passed beam from a straight-line path through a predetermined angle. A first of the plurality of electrode means comprises focus electrode means adapted to receive focus voltages for establishing the focal distance of the beams. A second of the plurality of electrode means cooperates with another of the plurality of electrode means to form the asymmetrical field component.

Abstract:

First and second sealed, sterile containers, having respectively communicating first and second fluid transfer tubes, the tubes having diaphragms occluding the bores thereof, may be connected together in sterile manner for the sterile transfer of the contents of one container to the other. To accomplish this, one point of a double-pointed, hollow spike is inserted into each of the bores of the fluid transfer tubes, at the free ends thereof, the spike being proportioned to tightly and sealingly fit into each bore of the fluid transfer tubes. Thereafter, the spike and that portion of the tubes extending from the diaphragms to the free ends thereof are sterilized. Then the points of the spike are moved to rupture the diaphragms, to open a flow channel, and the sterile contents are transferred. The fluid transfer tube of the container receiving the desired sterile contents is then resealed, prior to breaking sterility by opening the connection.
