Abstract:

A method of fitting an electrical connector housing to an electrical contact comprises feeding a chain of connector housings linked end to end in the direction of their length towards a fitting station and, at said fitting station, effecting relative lengthwise movement between the leading housing of the chain and a contact in such a direction as to cause the leading housing to be fitted on to the contact.

Abstract:

Apparatus to automatically attach a terminal to electrical wire and thereafter to install insulating pods on the terminal. The apparatus includes a press which attaches the terminal to form a terminated wire and a transfer block which moves the terminated wire to an insulation pod installation station. The pods are delivered to the pod installation station in an interconnected fashion so as to form a strip of pods. The first pod on the strip is separated from the rest of the strip and placed on the terminated wire.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for automatically making harnesses such as those used for electrically interconnecting a plurality of spaced-apart, separate connection points. Insulated wire is fed through a press position where terminals are attached to the wire conductor. The insulation is displaced from a portion of the wire where a terminal is to be attached, thereby baring the conductor. A terminal is brought adjacent the bared conductor from a supply of terminals and crimped to the conductor. A wire feeding mechanism advances the wire so that the section having a terminal crimped thereto is removed from the press position and a new portion is brought into the press position for the attachment of another terminal. The automatic process is repeated until a pre-determined number of terminals are attached to the conductor at which time the wire can be severed to complete the manufacture of the harness. The apparatus has a control means which is programmable so that one of a variety of harness configurations can be set up and manufactured repetitively.

Abstract:

A wire transfer mechanism for transporting a length of wire conductor from a feed location to a terminating location and then depositing the length of wire at a collection location is disclosed. The mechanism includes at least one transfer arm mounted for pivotable motion back and forth; a releasable gripper mechanism positioned at the end of each transfer arm for gripping a length of wire to inhibit relative motion in a direction normal to the axis of the wire, and an actuator mechanism for releasing the gripper mechanism while the transfer arms move from a wire terminating position to a wire pickup position at a finite velocity and for decelerating the transfer arms, so that the momentum of a wire gripped in the gripper mechanism will carry it away from the transfer arms in a direction normal to the axis of the wire.

Abstract:

An electrical connector system which includes electrically conductive wires terminating in tab receptacles, electrically conductive blade contacts and an electrically insulative terminal block assembly to facilitate the joining and supporting of the wires to the blade contacts. The terminal block assembly is comprised of two portions. The first portion is a fixed block with apertures, each for receiving and supporting a blade contact in a predetermined orientation. The second portion of the terminal block is a movable block with barrels or pockets, each for receiving an electrically conductive wire, each of which wire terminates with a tab receptacle. Because of the design and construction of the portions of the terminal block assembly, the tab receptacles and their electrically conductive wires may be conveniently and reliably mounted onto the blade contacts in the fixed portion of the terminal block assembly and securely retained there.

Abstract:

In electrical terminal crimping apparatus comprising two crimping dies so mounted that one die is constrained to move towards and away from the other die, a wheel having circumferentially spaced, outwardly extending vanes is rotatably mounted with respect to the dies and a pawl, operatively connected to the movable die, is adapted to engage a ratchet, carried by the wheel, to effect partial rotation of the wheel. After a terminal has been crimped to an electrical lead and as the movable die moves away from the fixed die, the pawl automatically engages the ratchet and causes the wheel to rotate so that a vane pushes the terminated lead laterally from between the dies to a sufficient extent to permit the stripped end of another lead to be positioned between the dies.
