Abstract:
A desurging system is placed in the fluid flow line near the output of a fluid pump to remove pressure fluctuations created in the flowing fluid by action of the fluid pump. The fluid passes through a gas-loaded, diaphragm type, fluid desurger. A gas volume control unit automatically controls the gas volume in the desurger by controlling both the gas-charging and the gas-discharging operations in response to measurements of the gas volume in the desurger and the gas flow rate into and out of the desurger. A diaphragm protection control unit is responsive to a measurement of the differential pressure across the diaphragm of the desurger to automatically bleed off the gas pressure in the desurger any time that such pressure exceeds the strength limitations of the diaphragm.

Abstract:
A logging tool recording system counts and converts depth pulses into a digital coded format. Such digital coded format is converted to a serial digital word for recording on an analog recorder. During playback the digital serial word is converted back into a digital coded format for reproduction by means of a visual digital display.
A system and method for controlling production fluid flow from a chamber extending between a casing disposed in a downhole bore and tubing disposed in the casing. A plurality of valves are disposed in respective openings formed in the tubing, and a passage is formed in each valve for connecting the chamber and the tubing interior. The valves are selectively closed to prevent any fluid flow through the passage, and selectively opened to permit fluid flow from the chamber, through the passage, and into the interior of the tubing. Thus, the volume of fluid passing from the chamber, through the valve members, and to the interior of the tubing is controlled.

Abstract:
A method for selecting a demulsifier for breaking a water-in-oil emulsion employs at least two electrodes to be immersed in a plurality of emulsion samples, each having a different demulsifier added. The current flow between the electrodes is recorded for each sample. The demulsifier producing the most rapid rate of change of current flow is identified as the most effective demulsifier in breaking the water-in-oil emulsion.
Method And Apparatus For Mud Pulse Telemetry In Underbalanced Drilling Systems

Abstract:
A mud pulse telemetry system uses a downhole pulser to produce sequences of positive and/or negative pulses according to a selected pattern. Positive pulses, negative pulses, and combinations thereof may be produced. A flow rate sensor at the surface measures changes in the flow rate at the top of the wellbore instead of or in addition to changes in the pressure. The flow rate changes are detectable even though the pressure pulses themselves may have a poor signal to noise ratio. This enables the invention to function effectively in underbalanced drilling wherein the use of light muds with a high gas content is required. One embodiment of the invention uses a conventional downhole pulser with the main valve closed and the pilot valve operating in a direct pulse mode.
Remote Sensing Of Hydrocarbon Gas Seeps Utilizing Microwave Energy

Abstract:
A radar transmitter directs a beam of microwve energy at a first frequency through the atmosphere. A gas seep in the atmosphere irradiated by the beam of microwave energy is excited to emit microwave energy at a second frequency characteristic of the particular species of gas. A radar receiver is tuned to produce video signals representative of the microwave energy at the second frequency. An amplitude discriminator measures the amplitudes of the video signals during each radar sweep as an indication of gas concentration in the seeps and counts the number of video signals during each radar seep as an indication of the size of the seeps.
