A data processing apparatus, comprising a metadata store storing information about files that are stored in a distributed data storage system, and comprising a class database; one or more processing units; logic configured for receiving and storing in the class database a definition of a class of data storage servers comprising one or more subclasses each comprising one or more server selection criteria; associating the class with one or more directories of the data storage system; in response to a data client storing a data file in a directory, binding the class to the data file, determining and storing a set of identifiers of one or more data storage servers in the system that match the server selection criteria, and providing the set of identifiers to the data client.

Abstract:

Embodiments of the present invention provide for sending data over a generic network interface in such a way that the resources used by the host CPU for packetization is minimized, allowing more packets to be sent across the network than is currently possible using existing technologies. Data is sent in a timely manner, minimizing jitter associated with real-time data delivery, especially for multimedia applications. CPU resource utilization is achieved by using a number of different techniques, such as zero-copy data movement where the data from a storage system is made available directly to the network driver without creating intermediate copies that consume CPU resources to do the copying.

Abstract:

Quantitative data about storage load and usage from storage elements of a data storage system are collected. The storage elements are ranked according to the collected quantitative data. A partition across the storage elements in which to store a user requested file is determined. Members of the partition are identified as being one or more of the storage elements. The members are selected from the ranking. The ranking is updated in response to the ranking having aged or the system having been repaired or upgraded. The data storage system has metadata server machines, content server machines arranged in groups where each group has a respective one or more of the content server machines, and a system interconnect to which the metadata and content server machines are communicatively coupled. A distributed file system is to be executed in the metadata server machines, the content server machines, and the client machine, to hide complexity of the system from a number of client machine users. Abstract:

Computer-implemented methods and systems for replication of data between mirrored data sites are provided. An exemplary method may comprise receiving a data object at a mirrored data site, the mirrored data site including one or more data nodes. The data objects are replicated to the one or more data nodes internally. Then, a data object reference associated with the data object is generated. The reference referring to the data object is queued for transmission to all other mirrored data sites. The data object reference associated with the data object is transmitted to the other mirrored data sites. When the data object is received at each mirrored data site, it is replicated to one or more data nodes within the site. After transmitting the data object, the data object reference is discarded.
