A method and ultrasonic meter system for determining pipe roughness. At least some of the illustrative embodiments are ultrasonic meters comprising a spool piece that couples within a flow of fluids, and a first transducer pair mechanically mounted to the spool piece and acoustically coupled to the flow of fluids (wherein the first transducer pair comprises an upstream transducer and a downstream transducer in operational relationship to the upstream transducer and defines a first chord there between). The ultrasonic meter is configured to determine diagnostic data based on acoustic signals transmitted between the first transducer pair (wherein the diagnostic data comprises an asymmetry of the flow of fluids in the spool piece, a cross flow of the flow of fluids in the spool piece, and a profile factor of the flow of fluids in the spool piece). The ultrasonic meter is configured to determine changes in the roughness of a pipe mechanically coupled to the ultrasonic meter based on a trend of the diagnostic data (wherein the trend comprises a substantially constant value of about unity for both the asymmetry and the cross flow and a substantially changing value for the profile factor).

An ultrasound measurement apparatus () is set forth for measuring the flow speed of a fluid in a conduit () having a plurality of ultrasonic transducers () pairs of which span between them a plurality of main measurement paths and at least one diagnosis measurement path, and having an evaluation unit () which is made to determine a respective individual measured value for the flow speed from transit times of ultrasound transmitted and received with and against the flow on each measurement path (), to calculate individual measured values of the main measurement paths as a main measured value for the flow speed, to determine a measured diagnosis value from the at least one individual measured value of the diagnosis measured path and to compare the main measured value and the measured diagnosis value with one another. In this respect at least some of the ultrasonic transducers () have widened transmission and reception lobes so that a plurality of ultrasonic transducers () are arranged in their transmission and reception lobes so that, in addition to the primary measurement paths () spanned between two mutually aligned ultrasonic transducers, at least one additional secondary measurement path () is opened as a main measurement path or as a diagnosis measurement path.

The invention relates to a method of measuring a gas flow velocity using an ultrasonic gas flow meter, wherein said ultrasonic gas flow meter includes a horizontal piping through which gas can flow in a flow direction and which has a central axis, at least one pair of measurement paths of equal length spaced apart, extending parallel to one another in separate horizontal planes and inclined to said flow direction, wherein each horizontal plane of a pair of measurement paths is vertically offset by an equal predefined distance from said central axis, wherein an ultrasonic transducer is arranged at each end of said measurement path and each ultrasonic transducer is adapted to selectively act as an ultrasonic transmitter and an ultrasonic receiver, the method comprising the steps of measuring a flow velocity of said gas in a measurement path arranged in an upper region of said piping, measuring a flow velocity of said gas in a measurement path arranged in a lower region of said piping and using the results of these two measurements to predict if a liquid is present in said piping during said measurement.
