A ball bearing assembly includes a polymer outer bearing ring molded over and partially enclosing a metal annular outer raceway. The metal annular outer raceway may be economically formed from sheet metal or wire. The polymer outer bearing ring may be mounted within a metal housing to provide support and/or self-alignment capability.

Abstract:

There is disclosed a bearing for mounting on a multi-sided shaft having an outer race and an inner race coaxial with and rotatable relative to the outer race. The inner race is formed with a central bore having a plurality of internal corners which accommodate a multi-sided shaft. The central bore is preferably adapted to accommodate hexagonal and square shafts. The central bore has at least one circumferential groove in the bore and an elastomeric ring mounted into the groove. The grooves are formed at such depth that the elastomeric ring is exposed at the internal corners of the central bore whereby when the bearing is mounted the elastomeric material will contact the shaft and dampen the relative motion between the bearing and the shaft.

Abstract:

An acoustic transducer assembly is provided having a one or two dimensional array of transducer elements, an electrical circuit element such as a circuit element and a backing for interconnecting transducer elements to corresponding contacts or traces of the circuit element. The backing is a block of acoustic attenuating material having a conductor extending therethrough between each transducer element and the corresponding circuit contact. The block has acoustic properties, including acoustic impedance and acoustic velocity, to achieve a desired degree of acoustic match with the transducer elements and/or to permit coupling of acoustic energy from the conductors into the block. The block may be of a single material or may have different volumes of two or more materials having different acoustic properties to achieve desired results. Multiple thin conductors or conducting fibers or foils may be utilized for each transducer element to reduce or eliminate acoustic coupling into the conductors. Acoustic coupling into the conductors may also be reduced by providing off-center contact with the transducer elements.

Abstract:

A bearing blank is cast or machined of cast iron to a configuration near a final shape of a desired bearing element. A first surface of the bearing blank, corresponding to a sliding surface of the desired bearing element, is remelted while other portions of the bearing blank remain in a solid state. The remelted first surface is quenched such that fine particles of iron carbide precipitate in a remelted zone having an increased hardness and a decreased presence of graphite particles. A bearing element having a core portion composed of cast iron and an integral first surface portion including a precipitate of fine iron carbide particles, and having greater hardness and lesser incidence of graphite particles than the core portion, is also described.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for controlling the delivery of gobs to each section of a multiple section glassware forming machine to assure that no one section can authorize the delivery of a gob of molten glass to any other section. The invention discloses means for monitoring the time of occurrence within a machine cycle of the delivery enable pulse from each section and for determining whether this delivery enable pulse occurs within a predetermined time window. In the event either the leading or trailing edge of this pulse occur outside predetermined time windows, the gob interceptor associated with the machine is activated to reject the gobs intended for that section. The invention also discloses means for monitoring the motion of a gob interceptor to provide assurance to an operator that the interceptor has moved to either a delivery or intercept position in a timely manner. The time lag between a command to the interceptor and the interceptor's actual arrival at a predetermined position is monitored and it exceeds a predetermined value a command is given to the retract mechanism associated with the gob distributor to retract the distributor to prevent delivery of gobs to all sections of the machine.

Abstract:

An annular collar includes a first clamping surface to be positioned radially outwardly of a surface of a bearing inner ring. The annular collar is made of a thermoelastic material such that an increase in temperature decreases the circumference of the annular collar and causes the first clamping surface to clamp against the surface of the bearing inner ring. The thermoelastic material may be a shape memory alloy or a polymer.
