Abstract:

A magnetron with mechanisms for smoothly and continuously adjusting a DC power applied to its targets to compensate for the changes in the sputtering characteristics of the targets that occur with target aging. A magnetron according to the present teachings includes a set of concentric targets for sputtering a film onto a wafer in response to an AC power and a DC power applied to the targets and a power controller that adjusts the DC power. The adjustments to the DC power enable the magnetron to maintain uniformity in the thicknesses of films formed with the magnetron throughout the life of its targets.

Abstract:

A magnetron with mechanisms for controlling the magnetic field that acts on its targets in such a manner as to provide control over erosion patterns and independent control of stress, uniformity, deposition rate, and coupling coefficient of a deposited film. A magnetron according to the present teachings includes a set of targets each for eroding a material for deposition onto a wafer contained in the magnetron and a mechanism for adjusting a racetrack position on each target. The racetrack position defines the areas of the targets from which a predominant amount of the material is eroded. The control of racetrack position enables precise control of erosion characteristics and control over stress, uniformity, deposition rate, and coupling coefficient.

Abstract:

An improved circuit is provided for application to a radiation survey meter that uses a detector that is subject to dead time. The circuit compensates for dead time over a wide range of count rates by producing a dead-time pulse for each detected event, a live-time pulse that spans the interval between dead-time pulses, and circuits that average the value of these pulses over time. The logarithm of each of these values is obtained and the logarithms are subtracted to provide a signal that is proportional to a count rate that is corrected for the effects of dead time. The circuit produces a meter indication and is also capable of producing an audible indication of detected events.

Abstract:

The invention uses an ion beam to polish a rotatable substrate from an oblique angle between the horizontal and the center line of the gun to the substrate to upgrade the quality of substrates. Alternatively, the substrates are left in the high vacuum chamber without breaking the vacuum for in-situ deposition of thin films thereby avoiding contamination, and to provide premium optics. A wobble stick arrangement is provided to align the ellipsometer reflected beam with the ellipsometer detector during operation without breaking the vacuum which, if broken, would admit contamination.

A plunger has a perimeter for spaced cooperation with a guide bore along a reciprocation axis. A torque control mechanism for wrenches and the like in which a pivot block has one end rockably engaging a force tranmsission member, an axially movable plunger has one end rockably opposing a second end of the pivot block, a ball screw carried by the plunger has a control ball element engaging the second end of the pivot block, a balance cam carried by the plunger provides seat for a coiled compression spring having its opposite end engaged by an antifriction device permitting the spring to turn for adjustment purposes, a rotatably adjustable transfer screw engages the antifriction device and is threaded through a stop adjusting nut mounted in the distal end portion of tubular housing for the mechanism. The distal end portion of the transfer screw is secured in an end cap fixed within a distal end of a handle mounted on the housing; and the components of the mechanism provide a continuous passage therethrough for respective adjustment wrenches to be applied from the handle end of the tool to respectively the ball screw, a ball screw lock screw, and to said balance cam.
