Abstract:

Pillared interlayered clays are reacted with a base such as ammonium hydroxide to increase the ion exchange capacity thereof. The pillared interlayered clays are prepared by reacting a smectite clay, such as bentonite, with a metal complex polymer, such as chlorhydrol, and calcining the resulting product.

Abstract:

Stable pillared interlayered clay compositions are prepared by reacting smectite type clays with polymeric cationic hydroxy metal complexes of metals such as aluminum, zirconium, and/or titanium. These novel interlayered clay compositions which possess substantial surface area in pores of less than 30 A in diameter are used as catalysts, catalytic supports, and sorbents.

Abstract:

A stable rare earth exchanged zeolite having high catalytic activity and improved coke selectivity is prepared by a series of exchange steps whereby the rare earth is introduced into the zeolite in a multi-step e. g. , two step manner. The method comprises exchanging a sodium zeolite to less than 4. 0 weight percent Na. sub. 2 O, exchanging with rare earth to give an initial rare earth oxide content of 0. 3 to 5 weight percent, calcining, and further rare earth exchanging the zeolite to give a final rare earth content of 1. 0 to 10 weight percent.

Abstract:

Attrition resistant and stable catalyst composition comprising crystalline aluminosilicate zeolites e. g. rare earth exchanged zeolites dispersed in an inorganic matrix containing synthetic amorphous silica-alumina and clay are prepared by a process which reduces the level of polluting ammonium salts by eliminating the use of ammonium hydroxide in the steps prior to primary filtration. During the synthesis of the amorphous inorganic matrix wherein alkali metal silicate and aluminum salt solutions are gelled and subsequently combined with zeolitic materials, the ammonia reagent is replaced by non-polluting additives such as magnesium or calcium hydroxides (or oxides) prior to a primary filtration stage without decreasing the catalytic activity of the resulting zeolite promoted hydrocarbon conversion catalysts.

The high molecular weight complexes are prepared by hydrolysis of copolymerization of a metal complex such as aluminum chlorohydrol. The pillared, interlayered clays possess a high degree of thermal and hydrothermal stability and may be used in the preparation of catalysts and sorbents.
