A method of masking portions of a part from a high temperature coating, such as a plasma flame spray coating includes mask elements that extend between spaced ends. Hook and loop fasteners are associated with the two spaced ends. The hook and loop fasteners are of a material that can withstand very high temperatures such as are experienced in the high temperature coating. The hook and loop fastener elements may be metallic elements. While a single mask element may be utilized to wrap around the part, in another embodiment, a plurality of mask pieces can be assembled together to surround the part.

Abstract:
A method of measuring a coating deposits a layer of coating on an object. A laser beam is projected on the layer of the coating. A reflection of the project laser beam is received by the laser sensor. From this information, the thickness of the layer of the coating on the object is determined. A value related to the thickness of the layer of the coating may then be compared to a desired value.
An observation window is provided for use with a spray booth during a spray coating process where the observation window is located in a position to permit an operator to observe the spray coating process. The observation window is controlled to provide light transmission in the window suitable for the specific spray process being performed. The control can be automatic or operator controlled. The window is adapted to have a different light transmission during different spray processes such as plasma spray and HVOF spray.
