Abstract:

A molding process for a composite article uses a textured film layer to shape the surface of the composite article. The film layer is placed in the mold with the textured film surface exposed and a composite material is placed over the textured film surface. Preferably, the film layer is vacuum-formed onto the mold to take the shape of the mold. As it cures, the composite article takes the shape of the textured film layer to form a textured article surface. After demolding, the film layer adheres to the article as a protective coating, but can be readily removed from the article to expose an underlying textured surface of the article.

Abstract:

A separator plate in an electrochemical cell and method for making the same includes a body with an electrically conductive first section having fluid flow fields with a plurality of flow channels formed therein. A second section is provided adjacent to the first section that has a header area defining a manifold that supplies fluids to the flow fields of each fuel cell. The second section is non-conductive to prevent possible electrical interaction with any aqueous fluids of finite ionic conductivity present in the fuel cell, which may result in inefficient fuel cell operations.

Abstract:

A method of making a bipolar plate includes molding a non-conductive housing defining a plurality of receiving areas. A first plurality of conductive charges are located into each of the plurality of receiving areas. Compressive force is applied to each of the first plurality of conductive charges thereby defining a first plurality of conductive plates bonded on outer edges to the non-conductive housing. A second plurality of conductive plates are located onto the first series of conducive plates. The first and second plurality of conductive plates are bonded together defining a coolant flow field therebetween.

Abstract:

A molding method includes inserting a preform having a predetermined part shape into an external mold having the predetermined part shape. The preform has therein a perforated shape memory polymer mandrel in its temporary shape, and a bladder positioned within the perforated shape memory polymer mandrel. The shape memory polymer mandrel has i) the predetermined part shape as the temporary shape and ii) a shrunken shape as its permanent shape, wherein the shrunken shape is configured such that it is removable from the predetermined part shape. The method further includes configuring the bladder such that it substantially blocks perforations of the mandrel in its temporary shape, injecting resin into the external mold between an inner surface of the external mold and an outer surface of the preform such that the resin impregnates the preform, and curing the injected resin, thereby forming a molded part.

Abstract:

A method includes providing a shape memory polymer in a permanent shape, where the permanent shape is at least part of a predetermined part shape, converting the shape memory polymer from the permanent shape into a temporary shape, where the temporary shape is more open than the permanent shape. The method further includes spraying a material onto at least one surface of the shape memory polymer in its temporary shape and reverting the shape memory polymer, having the material on the at least one surface, back to the permanent shape.
