Abstract:

A system and method for maintaining data integrity in computer systems which have removable hard drives. The system and method of the present invention ensures that a disk drive which is reinserted into the computer system is the drive used to boot the operating system. When the computer system boots, the system reads the unique drive identification information from the hard drive and stores this identification information in memory for later use. Later, the computer system may be powered down or placed in a suspend state where the hard drive may be removed and a new drive inserted. When the computer system resumes and first requires access to the hard drive, the system and reads the drive identification information from the drive and compares the drive identification obtained from the drive with the drive identification information stored in memory at boot time. If the two sets of identification information are identical, then control is returned to the native operating system and access is allowed to the drive. In this case, since the two sets of drive identification information are identical, the same drive is comprised in or has been reinserted in the computer system, and thus operation can proceed.

Abstract:

An apparatus and method for determining cardiac performance in a patient. The apparatus includes a multifrequency conductance catheter for measuring instantaneous volume of a heart chamber with multifrequencies. The apparatus includes a mechanism for measuring instantaneous pressure of the heart chamber. The apparatus includes a mechanism for separating the multifrequencies. The apparatus includes a mechanism for signal processing the instantaneous volume and the pressure of the heart chamber to identify mechanical strength of the chamber and for automatically producing a plurality of desired waveforms at desired frequencies for the conductance catheter. The processing mechanism is connected to the pressure measuring mechanism, the separating mechanism and the volume measuring mechanism.

Abstract:

A system and method for remotely measuring the temperature of an object using microwave radiometry that may be used in hostile environments. A single pole-single throw reflective PIN diode switch is operable in a PASS mode and a BLOCK mode. In the PASS mode, the switch passes the power received from the object to a low-noise block converter (“LNB”) for amplification. In the BLOCK mode, the switch blocks the object power and reflects the load noise power of an ambient temperature load to the LNB. A detector diode detects the amplified power output during both the BLOCK and PASS mode and the AC signal from the detector is converted to an output signal proportional to the difference in the noise powers detected in the PASS and BLOCK modes. A servo loop uses the output signal to generate a feedback signal to a noise injection diode that causes the diode to inject sufficient power into the LNB to automatically maintain a balance between noise power measured in the PASS mode and the combined noise powers measured in the BLOCK mode. The output signal is then used to compute the temperature of the object.

Abstract:

An apparatus for determining heart transplant rejection of a heart in a patient includes at least two electrodes adapted to be sewn into the heart that span the left ventricle. The apparatus includes a voltage generator adapted to be inserted in the patient which generates a voltage to the two electrodes and senses the resulting voltage from the two electrodes.
