A typewriter printing assembly is disclosed in which a typing assembly and type actuator are mounted for movement along a shaft and are connected to a follower. The connection of the typing assembly and follower is a detachable one, and the support for the shaft is removable for facile assembly and disassembly of the typing assembly on the shaft. The type actuator comprises a light interfitting assembly of the type hammer and support formed to accommodate the shaft and for straight line movement of the hammer when activated.
A lead screw and follower assembly employs a specially formed helical thread and a follower assembly employing bearings which ride on the several surfaces of the helical thread, thereby providing essentially frictionless motion and also preventing deflection of the lead screw during operation. The lead screw is preferably formed of a synthetic material such as polycarbonate incorporating glass fibers and the bearings are either roller or ball bearings.
The hydraulic system for raising and lowering a heavy keel comprises a cylinder, a piston movable in the cylinder and connected to the keel, and an accumulator for supplying hydraulic fluid at a positive pressure below that necessary to raise the keel against the piston in a direction for raising the keel. A hand pump is provided for supplying hydraulic fluid at a pressure great enough to overcome the weight of the keel. A valve allows the hydraulic fluid to flow either to or from the cylinder. An enlarged flow line communicates the accumulator with the cylinder so that if an external force should cause the keel to raise suddenly, hydraulic fluid would flow rapidly beneath the piston. A gas is provided on the other end of the piston for providing a cushioning effect and restricting the speed at which the keel can be raised. A restricted flow valve is provided in the system for regulating the speed at which the keel can be lowered.
Printing apparatus for printing characters in a line on paper has a print drum arranged horizontally with respect to the paper and is formed having the indexing means and the translational drive means affixed to the frame to greatly decrease the mass of the assembly. An actuator is arranged inside the print drum and a hammer arm extends at a 45. degree. angle up and into the print drum to contact the actuator thereby driving a selected character outward into contact with the paper. The print drum includes rings having T-shaped characters slidably retained therein in a radial fashion. The characters are retained in the ring by means of a unitary elastic band which passes through slots formed in each type carrier.
A printing mechanism includes a right-angle drive for imparting rotation to a rotary printing element having printing type thereon, rotation of the print element selecting a specific character to be imprinted on a printing medium. The right-angle drive permits the printing element to be moved transversely of the printing medium while receiving rotational mechanical signals for imparting the requisite rotation to the printing element. A shaft having a longitudinal keyway therein passes though a bevel gear of the right-angle drive, there being a key extending from the gear to the keyway to permit the sliding of the gear along the shaft while being controlled in rotation thereabout. A carriage carrying the rotary print element and the right-angle drive is driven in the transverse direction by a worm gear having a worm surface provided with inclined sides which mate with a pair of angled inclined rollers supported by the carriage for engagement with the worm gear. The inclined rollers, the keyway, and a spring forcing together gears of the right-angle drive inhibit any backlash to permit an accurate printing of a message. The foregoing mechanical configuration avoids undue complexity so as to permit rapid operation of the printing mechanism.

Man says mysterious Civil War photo was really teenage hoax
The Georgia Historical Society has records showing a John Potter donated the photo of the photo in March 1986. The documentation included the description: "Only known photograph of Civil War Ironclad C.S.S. Georgia mounted in plexiglass frame."Potter showed an ad he bought in his Jenkins High School yearbook to promote the 8 mm film. It shows the brothers dressed as Civil War soldiers, with a Confederate flag behind them, beneath the caption: "A New Film By John Potter: 'The C.S.S. Georgia-Ironclad.'"
