Abstract:

When a tube is to be cut into a plurality of sections, a tube feed assembly is operated to rotate the tube and to move the tube along its longitudinal central axis into a work station. The tube and a mandrel move into a telescopic relationship at the work station. The tube feed assembly presses an end of the tube against a stop surface on a stripper at the work station. A plurality of knives are moved into engagement with the tube to cut the tube. Relative movement between the stripper and mandrel separates the sections of the tube from the mandrel. A scrap end section of the tube is directed to a scrap receiving location. Other sections of the tube are directed to a product receiving location.

Abstract:

When a tube is to be cut into a plurality of sections, the tube and the mandrel are moved into a telescopic relationship. The tube is cut to form a plurality of product sections and at least one scrap section while the tube and mandrel rotate about a central axis of the mandrel. The scrap section is gripped while the scrap section and mandrel are in a telescopic relationship. The mandrel and scrap section are moved out of the telescopic relationship while continuing to grip the scrap section. The product sections are received at a receiving location. Scrap sections may be formed at opposite end portions of the tube and gripped by first and second grippers. Backup rollers may be pressed against the tube during cutting of the tube.

Abstract:

A tube positioning apparatus has at least one mandrel for positioning tubes for processing. A variable tube positioning stroke length is facilitated for optimizing stroke length and for optimizing the time required to position and process tube, such as by cutting. The tube positioning apparatus comprises a slide block having a mandrel attached thereto. The slide block is actuated on a plurality of slide rails from a first position to a second position. In the first position, the mandrel is retracted and in a second position the mandrel is extended for access by processing tools, such as circular knives for cutting the tube into desired lengths. A programmable sequence timer is provided for establishing desired time intervals during which the slide block and attached mandrel are in the retracted position or the extended position. In a tube recutter implementation, the programmable timer facilitates selectable time intervals for maintaining the slide block and mandrel in an extended state, engaging cutting means such as circular knives, disengaging the cutting means, and retracting the mandrel from the extended position.

Abstract:

A roll stand for holding rolls of material such as paper rolls which allows the rolls to be mounted and material fed out. The roll stand includes a roll supporting bar which is raised and lowered by a mechanical system such as an air piston. The roll supporting bar is lowered to allow a roll of material to be mounted, and then raised to allow the roll to turn freely. The roll stand includes a roll retainer, including a bar which swings down against the end of the roll, to keep the roll properly positioned on the roll supporting bar. The roll retainer swings up out of the way while a roll of material is mounted or removed. A rotating mechanism maintains the roll retainer in whatever position it is moved to. The roll stand may also be configured to support a plurality of rolls, each roll lifted into place on its own roll supporting bar. The roll supporting bars are positioned to hold all the rolls with a minimum of floor space.

Abstract:

A lifting apparatus and system for lifting cylindrical rolls such as paper rolls is includes a horizontal beam with a gripping component at one end. A pivoting component is pivotally attached to the beam at another point. An engaging component is attached to the beam between the gripping component and the pivoting component and is located proximate the pivoting component. The pivoting component also includes an extension arm for connecting to a lifting mechanism such as a pulley or crane. The lifting apparatus is positioned over a horizontal roll so that the gripping component engages the roll in the center hole or hub. The engaging component grips the edge of the roll, and is securely held in place by the force of the pivoting component when lifting force is applied to the extension arm of the pivoting component. The lifting apparatus also allows easy maneuvering of a roll including mounting the roll in a horizontal or vertical position once the roll has been transported to the proper position.
