Abstract:

A bioreactor or cell culture surface comprises a multiplicity of microwells appearing, upon enlargement in the range of 200 to 1000 magnifications, as a honeycomb structure consisting of a plurality of rows of irregular hexagons, each having a transverse x-axis, a longitudinal y-axis, and a z-axis which defines a height of each microwell. Co-parallel major bases define the directionality of anticipated cell growth, while pairs of equilateral minor bases define the x-axis width of each microwell. An arrow-like geometry is defined by the equilateral pairs of minor bases which also define an x-axis separation between opposing major bases of the hexagon to induce cell growth directionality. An acute angle exists between the members of the arrow-like pairs of minor bases, while an obtuse angle exists between contiguous major and minor bases.

Abstract:

A transcutaneous port includes a subcutaneous port section and a bone fixation section. The subcutaneous port section has upper portion which has an axial channel and a first micro-textured external surface, and a lower portion which has therein a transverse channel connecting to the axial channel. The bone fixation section has a transosseous collar portion which has a second micro-textured external surface, and a threaded shaft portion. The first and second micro-textured external surfaces include a multiplicity of alternating microgrooves and ridges for tissue and bone integration. The transcutaneous port is surgically implanted into a site of a patient and a conductive wire is introduced from the axial channel to the transverse channel, and placed in the subcutaneous soft tissue and in contact with a neural signal source for transmitting neural signals to a prosthetic motor device.

Abstract:

Calcium sulfate composite particles for bone augmentation are disclosed. The composite particles are composed of aggregated calcium sulfate nanoparticles of a diameter from about 50 to about 800 nm, which include a mixture of calcium sulfate dihydrate and calcium sulfate hemihydrate. The composite particles have a diameter from about 200 to about 1,200 μm, and a mean half-life no less than 18 days. Further disclosed is a bone grafting material for bone augmentation. The bone grafting material includes a mixture of the calcium sulfate composite particles and a second type of calcium sulfate particles having a particle diameter from about 2 to about 60 μm, at a ratio from 1:1 to 4:1. The method of using the composite particles and the bone grafting material for bone augmentation is also disclosed.

An arcuate first skirt extends integrally and annularly about the optical core. Abstract:

An intra-ocular implant has an optical portion capable of optically transmitting light from an exterior of an eye to a retina thereof; and an outer skirt portion extending annularly about the optical portion. The outer skirt portion has anterior and posterior surfaces, one or both of the surfaces having a multiplicity of alternating regular microgrooves and ridges extending annularly about the optical portion. The multiplicity of alternating regular microgrooves and ridges have a substantially same width in a range of between about 4 to about 40 micrometers and a substantially same depth in a range of between about 4 to about 40 micrometers. The multiplicity of alternating regular microgrooves and ridges promote cell growth in a direction along longitudinal axes of the annular microgrooves and inhibition of cell growth in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axes, thereby inhibiting cell growth into the optical portion.

Abstract:

The present invention provides a dental, oral or maxillofacial implant, implant component and any other prosthetic appliance having an oxide ceramic coating on a metal surface. The oxide ceramic coating is preferably colored similar to the color of the surrounding tissues (e.g. similar to the color of bone, teeth or of mucosa). The oxide ceramic coating may comprise any oxidizable metal. Preferably, the oxide ceramic coating comprises zirconium or a zirconium alloy. The oxide coating is of a thickness that exhibits the desired color. Preferably the oxide ceramic coating is at least 20, 30, 50, 75, 100, 120 or more μm thick. The prosthetic implant appliances of the invention may be an abutment, ball attachment, bar, telescopic component or other implant components (e.g. magnetic attachments), or the implant itself trespassing the mucosa. The prosthetic appliances may be used for implant reconstructions. Furthermore, they may be used for making tooth-borne reconstructions like esthetic root posts, crowns/bridges and removable reconstructions. They may also be used for extraoral applications like implant-retained prostheses or hearing aids, or other maxillofacial applications. The dental, oral or maxillofacial implants, abutments or the prosthetic appliances combine the excellent esthetics and good biocompatibility of ceramics with the advantageous mechanical properties of metals. The invention also provides a method of making dental, oral or maxillofacial implant, implant component or a prosthetic device by oxidizing the surface of the metal., as well as the products made thereby.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to techniques for the preparation and implantation of implants with surgical cements composed primarily of calcium sulfate ("CS"). The first of these novel techniques involves the steps of: (1. ) precoating an implant with CS; (2. ) permitting the implant to dry, and, (3. ) thereafter grouting the implant in place with wet CS. The second embodiment involves: (1. ) grouting an uncoated implant in place with wet CS. Finally, the third embodiment involves: (1. ) precoating an implant with CS; (2. ) permitting it to dry; and, (2. ) subsequently press-fitting the implant in place without grouting.
