A system and method for synchronizing a number of specialized circuits or application-specific integrated circuits to a common timing standard is provided. The system includes a first communications device including at least first and second type communication paths which is configured to receive first and second timing signals in the first type communications path and to transmit data on the second type communications path. The data is transmitted in association with the received first timing signal. A controller or signal processor element is coupled to the first device and configured to receive the second timing signal and produce a timing word therefrom. A second communications device is coupled to the processor and configured to receive the second timing signal and produce a timing word therefrom. The second communications. device receives the timing word and the transmitted data and derives synchronization information therefrom.
Controlling Multiple Modems In A Wireless Terminal Using Dynamically Varying Modem Transmit Power Limits

International Classification:

US Classification:
455522, 455 69, 455 73, 375222
Abstract:
A mobile wireless terminal (MWT) includes multiple wireless modems. The multiple modems have their respective transmit outputs combined together to produce an aggregate transmit output. The multiple modems can concurrently transmit data in a reverse link direction and receive data in a forward link direction. The MWT is constrained to operate under an aggregate transmit power limit. Each of the multiple modems has an individual transmit limit related to the aggregate transmit power limit. An MWT controller adjusts the individual transmit power limits in the multiple modems based on an aggregate transmit power limit of the MWT and respective transmit power estimates from the modems, to cause each individual transmit power limit to track a corresponding individual modem transmit power.
Wireless Terminal Operating Under An Aggregate Transmit Power Limit Using Multiple Modems Having Fixed Individual Transmit Power Limits

Abstract:
A mobile wireless terminal (MWT) includes multiple wireless modems. The multiple modems have their respective transmit outputs combined to produce an aggregate transmit output. The multiple modems can concurrently transmit data in a reverse link direction and receive data in a forward link direction. The MWT is constrained to operate under an aggregate transmit power limit. Each of the multiple modems has an individual transmit limit related to the aggregate transmit power limit. When operating, over-limit ones of the multiple modems are deactivated and then reactivated to keep an aggregate transmit power of all of the modems below the aggregate limit, and to maximize data through-put on the forward and reverse links.

Abstract:
A system and method for determining timing offset errors in a low earth orbit satellite system based upon Doppler and Doppler rate of change is provided. A user terminal determines first and second timing offsets respectively associated with first and second satellite beams from respective first and second satellites. Next, the user terminal determines the Doppler and Doppler rate of change associated with the first and second satellite beams. A timing offset is estimated from the measured Doppler and Doppler rate of change and is then compared with the user terminal's own determined timing offset. If the comparison does not produce a value within a predetermined threshold, a beam identification error is declared.
Managing Searcher And Tracker Resources In A Wireless Communication Device

US Classification:

Abstract:
A Wireless Communication Device (WCD) includes multiple fingers that track one or more tracked transponder beams. Each tracked beam is from a respective tracked transponder. The WCD determines a tracked-beam searcher energy for each of the tracked beams, and an untracked-beam searcher energy for each of one or more untracked beams from each of the tracked transponders. The WCD attempts to determine a preferred one of the untracked beams that should become a tracked beam. This determination is made based on the tracked-beam and the untracked-beam searcher energies. The WCD assigns, or alternatively, reassigns, a finger to the preferred untracked beam when the attempt to determine a preferred untracked beam is successful. The transponders may be satellites or base stations.
Method And Apparatus For Scanning Frequency Channels For Handoff Candidates While Minimizing Battery Consumption

International Classification:

US Classification:

Abstract:
Techniques for scanning other frequency channels for candidate base stations are described. In one scheme, the scanning of other frequency channels is performed based on the received signal quality (e. g. , pilot Ec/Io) for an active base station that a wireless device is monitoring for user-specific and overhead messages. The scanning is bypassed if the active pilot Ec/Io exceeds a high threshold and performed if the active pilot Ec/Io is between the high threshold and a low threshold. In another scheme, the scanning of other frequency channels is performed at a rate that is a function of the active pilot Ec/Io. In yet another scheme, the scanning of other frequency channels is performed based on the active pilot Ec/Io and further using an adaptive timer. The timer is set to an initial value and thereafter adjusted by variable amounts determined by active pilot Ec/Io measurements.

Abstract:
Forward link transmission power to a user terminal in a wireless communications system having a plurality of beams is controlled by determining a baseline power level, P, from a received active pilot channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); determining a power margin, P, from an identified interference susceptibility; determining a power level correction, P, based on an identified packet error rate (PER); and setting Pbased on P, P, and P. For example, Pmay be set to a power level that is substantially equal to the sum of P, P, and P. The determination of each of P, P, and Pmay be performed in independently running control loops or processes.
