  • Filed:
    Jun 2, 2004
  • Appl. No.:
    10/860969
  • Inventors:
John B. Carlucci - Boulder CO, US
Louis D. Williamson - Denver CO, US
Jon C. Honhart - Arvada CO, US
  • Assignee:
Time Warner Cable Enterprises LLC - New York NY
  • International Classification:
    H04N 7/16
    H04N 7/173
    H04N 11/04
  • US Classification:
    725 62, 725 91, 725 92, 725 93, 37524012
  • Abstract:
In accordance with aspects of the present invention, a technique is implemented to effectively receive streaming multimedia content in digital form, parse and segment the received transport stream and process the segmented content. Such treatment of received programming content provides for efficient storage of such programming content, and effectively provides for access to such content by administrators of a broadband system as well as users of such systems. In accordance with the invention, a technique enables, among other things: the creation of reference frames for, e. g. , effective segmentation of programming content; encapsulation of programming content data as a UDP/IP datagram; associating programming content with provider and dedicated resource attributes; monitoring staging processor activity; effectively segmenting programming content that is scrambled; developing a unicast and multicast; compensating for missing or delayed programming content; and propagating video servers of varying manufacturers.
  • Systems And Methods For Analog Channel Reuse In A Cable System

  • US Patent:
    20080069155, Mar 20, 2008
  • Filed:
    Sep 14, 2006
  • Appl. No.:
    11/531900
  • Inventors:
Jon Honhart - Evergreen CO, US
  • Assignee:
TANDBERG TELEVISION INC. - Duluth GA
  • International Classification:
    H04N 7/173
    H04J 3/04
    H04J 3/16
  • US Classification:
    370535, 370437, 725114
  • Abstract:
A system and method is disclosed allowing a cable network provider to dynamically allocate a network resource, in the form of channel bandwidth, for conveying either analog or digital assets. Certain assets are distributed in a cable network in an analog manner but only during certain time periods. The network resources could be used for offering digital services at other times. A programmable RF switch allows network resources to be switched to convey digital assets when the analog channels are not required. The digital assets conveyed may comprise movies, games, or music and can be transferred during ‘off-hours’ for local storage in the set top box in anticipation of future requests by a user. When the asset is requested, the set top box first checks if the asset is locally available, and if so, spools it out locally.

  • US Patent:
    20190356944, Nov 21, 2019
  • Filed:
    May 17, 2018
  • Appl. No.:

    H04N 21/431
    H04N 21/466
    H04N 21/45
    H04N 21/454
  • Abstract:
A communications system includes content distribution hardware operable to detect presence of a window in a video stream in which to insert an advertisement. Multiple viewers receive and view the video stream. Advertisement management hardware in the communications system receives notification of the window as well as attributes of the viewers receiving the video stream. Based on the attributes associated with viewers, the advertisement manager hardware selects a particular advertisement suitable for the viewers amongst multiple advertisements to insert in the window. The content distribution hardware inserts the selected advertisement in the window for distribution to the multiple viewers. During distribution of the advertisement in the window, if desired, the content distribution hardware monitors further use of the multiple communication devices to detect if any of the communication devices discontinue receiving the video stream during the window of time.
