Abstract:
Described are techniques for simulation of a data storage system configuration. The simulation state reflects the data storage system configuration in accordance with an application programming interface (API) model. API calls result in reading existing data storage system configuration data and/or modifying the configuration data by execution of one or more low level calls. A daemon may operate in a simulation mode in which the low level calls are simulated rather than resulting in communications with a data storage system when operating in a non-simulation mode. A low level cache is used to store simulated values returned from the data storage system microcode. A high level cache is used to store API call return data. A seed file is used to initialize the simulation state.

Abstract:
Described are techniques in connection with restricting access to devices within a computer system. Access to a device may be restricted to one or more particular hosts within the computer system, and also further restricted to a particular software program executing within the particular hosts. The restricted access device (RAD) may be recognized by one or more hosts only having access to specific portions of the RAD unless special RAD I/O opcodes are used in connection with performing I/O operations. Access to a device may be obtained by enabling a particular use of the special RAD I/O opcodes. Subsequently, access to the same device may be disabled by stopping use of the special RAD I/O opcodes by a particular host and/or software executing in the host. RADs may be used in a variety of applications including, for example, restricting access to shared logs or journals and protecting a database.

Abstract:
In general, in one aspect, the invention relates to a method for processing data, the method includes obtaining, by a host operating system (OS) on a host computing device, a notification of a power down. The further includes, in response to the notification,: performing a data storage analysis on data stored in host OS memory to identify a plurality of processing tasks to perform on the data, making a first determination, based on the data storage analysis, that data processing is to be offloaded to a graphics processing unit, and in response to the first determination: sending a data processing request to the processing unit, obtaining a second notification associated with processed data from the graphics processing unit, and storing the processed data in a backup storage device.

Abstract:
Techniques for data deduplication may include: receiving write operations that write first data; partitioning the first data into a plurality of data portions; generating, using a first hash function, a plurality of data deduplication hash values for the plurality of data portions, wherein a first data deduplication hash value of the plurality of data deduplication hash values is produced by said generating for a first of the plurality of data portions; performing first processing using a Bloom filter to determine whether the first data deduplication hash value has a corresponding first entry in a data store of deduplication hash values; and responsive to the first processing determining the first data deduplication hash value does not have the corresponding first entry in the data store of deduplication hash values, performing second processing, said second processing including adding the corresponding first entry in the data store of deduplication hash values.

Abstract:
The system and methods disclosed herein relate to an improvement in automated data tiering technology. The systems and methods disclosed herein enhance database storage performance characteristics in myriad ways. First, the speed with which data can be relocated from one tier to another in a tiered data storage system is increased by reducing the number of sort cycles required to perform data relocation. In addition, data relocation among the tiers is performed on the backend by an offload engine, which results in uninterrupted access to read/write commands within the data storage system from a user's perspective on the frontend. Third, users are able to adjust the percentages of hot or cold data that are relocated within the database without having to alter the service level agreements. In this way, users can make spontaneous changes to performance characteristics related to the promotion and demotion of data stored within a tiered data storage system.
