Abstract:

The present invention provides a method of producing a copolymer. The method comprises placing a vinylbenzene, such as styrene, in a reactor, placing a cross-linking agent, such as divinylbenzene in the reactor, placing a chain transfer agent, such as mercaptan, in the reactor and forming a poly vinylbenzene in the presence of the cross-linking agent and the chain transfer agent. In this embodiment, the concentration of the cross-linking agent ranges from about 150 ppm to about 400 ppm and a concentration of the chain transfer agent ranges from about 100 to about 400 ppm.

Abstract:

The present invention provides to overcome the deficiencies of the prior art, the present invention provides a method of producing a polymer. The method includes taking a product stream from a monovinyl aromatic polymerization system wherein the product stream comprises a polymerized monomer and a monomer. The product stream is introduced into an up-flow heat exchanger in a presence of an initiator, such as a peroxide, that affects a polymerization of the monomer in the up-flow heat exchanger. The initiator may include a low-temperature initiator and a high-temperature initiator where a ratio of the high-temperature initiator to the low-temperature initiator can range from about 0:600 to about 50:600.

Abstract:

High impact polystyrene having a predominant core-shell morphology is made by polymerizing styrene in the presence of polybutadiene using toluene as a solvent. The thermoplastic polymer composition is characterized by a continuous phase of polystyrene containing dispersed graft copolymer particles having a core-shell structure with a polystyrene core occluded inside a polybutadiene shell. The styrene is desirably batch polymerized using styrene/toluene mixtures of about 70:30 by weight in the presence of from about 9 to about 15 weight percent polybutadiene while flashing off the toluene solvent.

Abstract:

It has been discovered that certain compounds serve as polymerization accelerators when employed together with peroxide initiators for the polymerization of vinylaromatic monomers. Suitable accelerators that increase the rate of decomposition of the peroxide initiator include, but are not necessarily limited to, hydroperoxides and/or metallic salts. Representative examples of suitable hydroperoxide accelerators include t-butyl hydroperoxide (TBH), cumyl hydroperoxide, and p-isopropyl cumyl hydroperoxide, whereas suitable metallic salt accelerators include cobalt naphthenate and cobalt acetoacetonate. Use of these accelerators when vinylaromatic monomers are polymerized in the presence of polybutadienes and peroxide initiators results in an increase in grafting as compared with similar copolymers made without the accelerator.
