Abstract:

An upgradeable media converter housing having a front housing and a rear housing. The front housing has a port for receiving a first connector, and a plurality of notches located on a periphery of the front housing. The rear housing has an open first end and a closed second end located distally from the first end. The rear housing also has a shoulder region located adjacent to the first end and a tubular region coupling the shoulder region to the closed end. A plurality of ramped protrusions located on an exterior surface of the shoulder engage a plurality of ramped protrusions located on the exterior surface of the shoulder of the rear housing to provide a snap-fit connection. The media converter fits into an existing faceplate of a wall outlet and can be upgraded by replacing a daughter board with another daughter board having a different converter mounted thereon.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus are disclosed for distributing power in a media converter system. The method involves converting an input voltage to an intermediate voltage and transmitting the intermediate voltage to a downstream converter. The downstream converter converts the intermediate voltage to a usable output voltage that is supplied to the media converter ports. The apparatus includes a main power supply for creating the intermediate voltage and downstream converters located remotely from the main power supply for converting the intermediate voltage to the usable output voltage. Transmission cables are also included for providing the intermediate voltage to the downstream converters. The apparatus may also include a bus with connections for the power supply and a power distribution module. The power supply and power distribution module utilize identical connections thereby providing flexibility in positioning the power supply and distribution module in a chassis.

Abstract:

A power supply is filtered while the amount of in-rush current required by the capacitive charging of the filter is limited. A resistor may be placed in parallel with a relay where the parallel combination is in series with the filtering capacitor. The relay is open upon applying power to the filter and remains open while the capacitor at least partially charges to cause charging current to pass through the resistor and thereby limit in-rush current. The relay is closed thereafter to provide a short circuit around the resistor and thereby unrestrict filtering by the capacitor. Alternatively, a common mode choke is disposed between a capacitor across input nodes and a capacitor across output nodes, whereby the size of the capacitors may be reduced to limit the in-rush current due to the common mode choke. The power supply filter may be included as part of a power distribution panel.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus are disclosed that permit multi-directional fiber optic connections to a device. The multi-directional aspect of the fiber optic connections permit the connections to be aligned closely with the direction of travel of the fiber optic cables that interface with the device. Closely aligning the fiber optic connections on the device with the fiber optic cables direction of travel maximizes the bend radius of the fiber optic cable near the point of connection or eliminates the bend altogether and reduces the likelihood of a broken fiber or signal attenuation.

Abstract:

An MDI crossover incorporated in a converter that automatically detects if a cable connection has been made to an MDI port and if so, is the orientation of the cable correct. If the orientation of the cable is not correct, effecting a crossover. The crossover may be made by detecting when a cable has been plugged into a first device indicating that a signal connection has been made between a second device and the first device and determining if the orientation of the cable is correct with respect to a signal input and output of the first device. A crossover of the orientation of the cable is performed if it is determined that the orientation is not correct.
