Abstract:
Systems and methods for controlling regeneration of a diesel particulate filter in a vehicle engine exhaust include detecting a distance of an object from the exhaust and controlling a regeneration event if the distance is less than a threshold value. The system and method may include a particulate filter disposed in the exhaust of the vehicle and a proximity sensor disposed adjacent an exhaust opening and positioned to detect presence of an object near the opening. A controller in communication with the proximity sensor is adapted for controlling regeneration of the particulate filter in response to the proximity sensor detecting the object near the opening.

Abstract:
A pick-up truck comprises a chassis, a rear axle attached to the chassis, a passenger cabin, a cargo bed, a trailer hitching structure, and a first image capturing device. The passenger cabin is attached to the chassis forward of the rear axle. The cargo bed is attached to the chassis over the rear axle. The trailer hitching structure is attached to the chassis at a position rearward of the vehicle occupant structure and has a trailer engaging portion accessible within the cargo bed. The first image capturing device is attached to the passenger cabin. The first image capturing device is mounted in a manner allowing the first image capturing device to capture an image of the trailer engaging portion of the trailer hitching structure.

Abstract:
Methods and systems are provided for identifying when an exhaust valve of an engine cylinder is not functioning as desired while the engine is being operated to raise a temperature of an exhaust system emissions control device, and in turn taking mitigating action. Thus, in one example a method comprises adjusting an amount of fuel that is provided to each of a plurality of cylinders of an engine during an exhaust stroke of the engine in response to an indication of degraded combustion stemming from a cylinder of the engine. In this way, the engine may continue to be operated to raise the temperature of the exhaust system emissions control device, while mitigating the issue of the degraded combustion.

Methods and systems are provided for regenerating an aftertreatment device of a vehicle. In one example, a method may include adjusting conditions of the regeneration in response to a stickiness of the exhaust valve. Adjusting conditions may include adjusting an air/fuel ratio and/or a post-injection amount.

Abstract:
Methods and systems for operating an engine to provide small amounts of energy to heat an aftertreatment device are described. In one example, fewer than the actual total number of engine cylinders are supplied with late post fuel injections (LPI) to heat an aftertreatment device without heating the aftertreatment device more than is desired. The engines fuel injectors may be operated at minimum fuel pulse widths to reduce fuel consumption.

Abstract:
Various systems and methods are described for an engine system with an exhaust gas treatment system including a particulate filter. In one example method, accumulated hydrocarbons are removed from the exhaust gas treatment system by increasing an exhaust gas temperature to a first temperature responsive to a particulate filter regeneration request during extended cold idle operation. After a predetermined duration, the exhaust gas temperature is increased to a second, higher temperature to regenerate the particulate filter.
