Abstract:

An apparatus () used by a plurality of devices to authenticate an accessory () is configured to operate with a device () of the plurality of devices. The accessory () applies an authentication algorithm to a key and a challenge () received from the device () and generates a response () thereto. A challenge and response memory () stores a subset of a set of challenges () and pre-computed responses (). The enabling circuit transmits a challenge () to the accessory () and receives a received response () therefrom. The enabling circuit () also compares the received response () to the stored response () corresponding to the stored challenge () sent to the accessory (). The enabling circuit () is configured to generate a normal operation enabling signal that enables normal operation of the device when the received response () matches the stored response and is configured not to generate the normal operation enabling signal when the received response () does not match the stored response.

Abstract:

Techniques are provided for preventing replacement of a one-time-programmable (OTP) component. The OTP component can be part of a wireless device. The wireless device is configured such that programming of a new IMEI code into the OTP component is permitted only when the wireless device is in a secure-mode state. A challenge-response protocol is used to place the wireless device in this secure-mode state.

Abstract:

A microcontroller (100) with an expansion port (112) includes internal ROM (110) and EEPROM (109) and an external expansion port. The EEPROM internal to the microcontroller is programmable only when the CPU (102) is executing instructions within the internal ROM. Additionally, instructions associated with a secure operation stored in the internal ROM may not be accessed without first executing the beginning instruction of the secure operation. Attempts to begin execution of the secure operation at any point other than the legal entry address will cause the internal ROM (110) to be disabled.
