Abstract:

A process for producing turbine rotors and other large rotating components of power-generating gas turbine engines using powder metallurgy techniques. The process involves forming a powder of a gamma prime or gamma double prime precipitation-strengthened nickel-based superalloy whose particles are about 0.100 mm in diameter or smaller. The powder is placed in a can and consolidated to produce an essentially fully dense consolidation, which is then hot worked to produce a billet of a size sufficient to form a forging of at least 2300 kg. The billet is forged at a temperature and strain rate to produce a forging with a uniform fine grain of ASTM 10 or finer. Thereafter, the forging may undergo a heat treatment to achieve a desired balance of mechanical properties while retaining a uniform grain size of ASTM 10 or finer.

Abstract:

An automatic dialer for controlling access to a long-distance telephone network. The automatic dialer includes a read/write memory. Each time the user attempts to call through the network a telephone number inaccessible via the network, an entry representing the area code and/or exchange of that telephone number is made in the memory. Prior to calling the network, the dialer compares the destination telephone number with the entries in the memory; the call is placed via the network only if the area code and exchange of the destination number do not match any of the entries. The entries in the memory are ordered according to recency of attempts by the user to access a telephone number within the groups of telephone numbers represented by the entries; when the memory is filled, the oldest entry is deleted to make room for the newest entry. Memory entries may be erased manually or automatically, by the network control station, without human intervention, to remove entries corresponding to areas added to the network. Automatic erasure is accomplished by the network sending an appropriate command, using tone signalling, as part of a message that the user has attempted to call a location not covered by the network.

Abstract:

An improved method for making a metal powder employs improved apparatus comprising, in combination, a fluid-cooled hearth for receiving metallic material which defines an alloy and which is to be melted, a plasma heat source adapted to melt the metallic material, a powder metal producer, and means to introduce the molten metallic material from the hearth into the powder metal producer. The fluid-cooled walls of the hearth resolidify a portion of the molten metallic material to form a skull as a barrier between the hearth and additional molten alloy produced within the hearth. This method and apparatus restricts introduction of impurities into the molten alloy which is later introduced into the powder metal producer. In one form, a fluid-cooled pouring trough, as a stream control device, can be disposed between the hearth and the powder producer to receive molten metal from the hearth and to introduce it into the powder metal producer.
