Abstract:

A portable handheld medical diagnostic device capable of communicating with an external device and a method thereof are disclosed. The device has a protective enclosure, a main circuit board provided in the protective enclosure and having a wireless connectivity component and a controller facilitating a physiologic measurement and communications of results of the physiological measurement to the external device. Also provided in the protective enclosure is a mezzanine circuit board having at least one of a plurality of additional feature modules and a universal connection interface programmed to both facilitate operation of the additional feature module and operate under the control of the controller as a control interface between the controller and the additional feature module.

Abstract:

A blood glucose measuring system which comprises a blood glucose (bG) meter and a portable communication device (PCD) and methods thereof are disclosed. The blood glucose meter comprises a measurement module and a wireless module, wherein the measurement module is operable to measure the blood glucose level of a blood sample, the wireless module is an embeddable module and communicates to the measurement module via a serial interface, and the wireless module is operable to wirelessly communicate to the portable communication device. The portable communication device is operable to wirelessly receive information from the blood glucose meter related to the blood glucose measurement.

Abstract:

A handheld diabetes management device includes a blood glucose measurement engine that measures a blood glucose level of a patient. The device includes a physical port that is exposed at an exterior of the device. The device includes a processing module that includes first, second, and third physical interfaces that are internal to the device. The device includes a multiplexing module that alternatively connects the physical port to one of the first, second, and third physical interfaces of the processing module. The processing module selectively operates the first physical interface using first and second modes. When an external host is connected to the physical port, the processing module selectively transfers information based on the blood glucose level to the external host using the first mode. When the external host is connected to the physical port, the processing module selectively provides file access to the external host using the second mode.

Abstract:

A handheld analyte meter, such as a blood glucose meter, has a measurement module, a rechargeable battery and a charging control to select a maximum charging current to regulate self-heating during recharging that can interfere with analyte tests. Self-heating by the meter can bias temperature measurements made inside the meter that are used to determine whether the temperature is acceptable for testing. Prior to beginning a charging session, the charging control selects the maximum charging current that does not change during the charging session based capacity of a charging source along with a first temperature measured near the battery that is compared with a first temperature range. By selecting the maximum charging current in this manner, the risk of the measurement module preventing a test under high lock-out conditions and the risk of the measurement module allowing a test when low lock-out conditions that are masked is reduced.
